We contemplated whether we should upload such a frivolous episode amidst the deeply upsetting events happening in the world at present, but we ultimately decided to go ahead. Please know that we stand with the Black community, and are working to educate ourselves on how we can support efforts to eradicate systemic racism and inequality. Racism and social injustice are absolutely abhorrent and we, as a human race, must learn to treat each individual with respect, dignity and equality. We have included some links in our show notes today to places you can donate to or use to educate yourselves. Please remember to be kind, and stay safe and healthy.

The frog regrets his unfilial ways and buries her by the river. Everytime it rains, he cries by the river, worried that her grave will wash away. HOW DO YOU HAVE MORE ENDINGS THAN RETURN OF THE KING? Judy and Teresa stressball their way through episodes 13-16 of “Crash Landing On You” (사랑의 불시착), a TVN romantic comedy starring Son YeJin and Hyun Bin.

Linda couldn't join us for this recording, but you can head over to read her essay about these episodes on a special public post on our Patreon page: patreon.com/kdramamyeyesout

If you were dismayed at the prospect of listening to us dissect 6.5 hours of drama, you'll be glad to know that we were able to condense it down to 72 minutes. That's how you do it, TVN!

Our next drama will be "Hospital Playlist" (슬기로운 의사생활), starring Jo JungSuk, Yoo YeonSeok, Jung KyungHo, Kim DaeMyung and Jeon MiDo. Don't worry, we'll still put out Mini-Episodes for "Kingdom" Season 2!

KOREANS LOVE KICKS AND THEY LOVE REVENGE. David and Robert join Judy and Teresa to talk about the first 2 eps of "Kingdom" (킹덤) Season 2, a Netflix mini-series starring Ju JiHoon and Bae DooNa.

Robert helpfully decides to angle for a craft beer sponsorship. David wants a beard desperately and also lends us professional insight about cinematography. Judy feels like the Crown Prince's (Ju JiHoon) sudden turn to revenge mode is abandoning his arc from Season 1 about saving his subjects from the zombie threat. Teresa posits a theory about how someone figured out how to use the immortal flower to create zombies.

Our next episode about the finale episodes of "Crash Landing On You" will be just Judy and Teresa, because Linda couldn't join us because of social distancing. Please be patient with us while we figure out a way to record together.

Digressions:

PLOT HOLES ABOUND! For a bunch of amateurs, Judy, Linda and Teresa have a lot of notes for episodes 9-12 of “Crash Landing On You” (사랑의 불시착), a TVN romantic comedy starring Son YeJin and Hyun Bin.

Linda is incensed that the epilogues are used to show the same damn scene in Switzerland over and over, instead of developing side characters who should be contributing more to this story. Judy is upset that the lines are so unmemorable that they're NOT Crash Landing On You! Get it???!!! SeungJun (Kim JungHyun) and Dan (Seo JiHye) become increasingly pointless in these episodes.

Digressions:

1:55 – New Patreon donors and Listener E-mails!

17:59 – Anime recommendations: “Toradora!” (とらドラ!), “Fruits Basket” (フルーツバスケット) and “Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits” (かくりよの宿飯)

20:47 – “Welcome to Night Vale” podcast

22:37 – Linda’s looking forward to “Hospital Playlist” (슬기로운 의사생활) premiering March 12

31:15 - Abduction of Shin SangOk and Choi EunHee. Click here to read a Wiki article about the incident.

56:37 – Are the “Military World Games” a real thing?

Some Korean terms:

날로먹다: [nal-lo-meok-da] to eat raw; used as a description of greed.

입짧은 공주: [ip-jjal-beun-gong-joo] Picky Princess.

찜질방: [jjim-jil-bang] sauna bathhouse.

영접하다: [yeong-jeop-ha-da] to contact a spirit; to be possessed by a spirit.

달달구리: [dal-dal-goo-ri] slang for sweet treats. We confused "sweetmeats" with "sweetbreads". The translator did use "sweetmeats" correctly, but it is an archaic word, so it doesn't seem appropriate to use for "달달구리", a new slang term.

죽: [jook] porridge.

DON'T TELL NO PORKY, GIGABYTCH. Judy, Linda and Teresa are finally getting some flutters from the real danger in episodes 5-8 of “Crash Landing On You” (사랑의 불시착), a TVN romantic comedy starring Son YeJin and Hyun Bin.

Corrections: Judy called Choi WooSik and Kim JungHyun by the wrong name. Oops!

Some of the subtitles in this drama are just WACKY. We miss Jean (she of the "Vagabond" subtitles") so much. Judy honors ManBok (aka The Wiretapper played by Kim YoungMin) with his own musical sting. We feel bad for Seo JiHye for having to play yet another Sharon-like character. Meanwhile, we do NOT feel bad for Kim JungHyun and wish someone a bit more seductive and dangerous was playing SeungJun.

We are planning a special episode that you can turn on as you’re watching like a commentary track. Please join Patreon to participate in our poll or make a suggestion! The poll is open until March 16 and the current leader is “My Holo Love” starring Yoon HyunMin and Ko SungHee. You can also comment with your own suggestion!

Digressions:

2:11 – New Patreon donors!

7:16 – Patreon poll open until March 16!

9:49 – Linda’s bored with “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim?” and “Queen: Love and War”

11:28 – Teresa watched “Parasite”; some follow up thoughts. Click here to watch Bong JoonHo and Choi WooSik analyze the first scene.

20:07 – “The Noble Blood” podcast

54:33 – Is “Crash Landing On You” an accurate portrayal of North Korean life? Click here and here to watch the videos of North Korean defectors talking about the details in the drama.

1:08:53 – “Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove it” (理系が恋に落ちたので証明してみた)

1:15:57 – We miss Korean seafood

Some Korean terms:

재벌: [jae-beol] tycoon; rich person.

반지하: [ban-ji-ha] half basement.

옥탑방: [ok-tap-bang] rooftop apartment.

제수꽃다발: [je-soo-kkot-da-bal] this was translated to "gigabytch" in the drama; 제수없다 [je-soo-up-da] means unlucky and 꽃다발 [kkot-da-bal] means flower bouquet. In conclusion, we have no idea what this particular slang term means.

견우와 직녀: [gyeon-oo-wa-jik-nyeoh] folk tale of lovers separated in the night sky by the Milky Way and they are able to meet once a year on July 7 via a bridge formed by crows and magpies.

치맥: [chi-mek] short for chicken-mekjoo (beer).

능구렁이: [neung-goo-rung-ee] Asian king snake; used to describe an untrustworthy person; "snake in the grass".

못살아: [mot-sal-ah] expression of frustration; literally “I can’t live!”

모태솔로: [mo-teh-sol-lo] used to describe someone who has never dated.

새끼: [se-kki] the term for a baby animal used by mothers as a term of endearment; can also be used insultingly (ie. bastard or son of a bitch).

Audio credits:

DO YOU FEEL THE PITTERPATS? Judy, Linda and Teresa wonder if they should be feeling heart flutters from episodes 2-4 of “Crash Landing On You” (사랑의 불시착), a TVN romantic comedy starring Son YeJin and Hyun Bin.

The drama is doing a great job at poking fun at its own tropes. We are super invested in the wiretapper's (Kim YoungMin) wellbeing and not at all interested in JungHyeok's (Hyun Bin) investigation into the truck accident. We definitely think SeRi and JungHyeok are cute together but don't anticipate any burning passion in future episodes.

We are planning a special commentary track episode! Please join Patreon to participate in our poll or make a suggestion. The poll is open until March 16 and so far the choices are “How Are You Bread” starring Suho (EXO) and Lee SeYoung, and “My Holo Love” starring Yoon HyunMin and Ko SungHee.

Digressions:

1:15 – “Parasite” (기생충)

3:08 – “Luna Nera”

4:08 – “Itaewon Class” (이태원 클라쓰)

8:59 – Follow-up to “Black Dog” (블랙독)

59:55 - Do you feel doogeun-doogeun?

1:12:21 – Who is Count Asura? Click here to read the Mazinger Wiki entry on the anime character.

Some Korean terms:

누룽지: [noo-roong-ji] crispy rice.

과자: [gwa-ja] snack, confectionary.

쫄따구: [jjol-dda-goo] derogatory term for lower ranking scrub.

두근두근: [doo-geun-doo-geun] descriptor for a racing heart; Japanese version is dokidoki.

이끌다: [ee-kkeul-da] to lead.

It's our Winter 2020 First Impressions episode! Strap yourselves in, because we didn't prepare any notes! On purpose!

Digressions:

1:57 – We hear from one of our Patreon patrons!

3:54 – “Dunkirk”

8:04 – “Chocolate” (초콜릿) is a JTBC romantic comedy starring Ha JiWon and Yoon KyeSang. This is giving us major “Hospital Ship” vibes, which is a terrible thing. Judy and Teresa have a hell of a time trying to tell characters apart. Poor poor Ha JiWon.

30:26 – “Queen: Love and War” (간택: 여인들의 전쟁) is a period drama from TV Chosun, which is a broadcasting station that none of us have heard of. It stars Kim MinGyu and Jin SeYun. Teresa is worried that she picked this drama to cover, but it was so wacky that we were weirdly hooked.

57:37 – “Crash Landing On You” (사랑의 불시착) is a TVN drama starring Son YeJin and Hyun Bin. As with most TVN dramas, this is in dire need of some ruthless editing. Judy can’t believe Linda and Teresa were willing to try this drama even though the main character ends up in North Korea BECAUSE OF A TORNADO.

1:17:58 – “Black Dog” (블랙독) is a ensemble piece from TVN, starring Seo HyunJin as a new teacher trying to muddle through her first job. Linda gives us an insider look into contract teacher positions in Korea.

1:40:36 - What's coming out in February? What will we cover next?

Some Korean terms:

군: [koon] suffix used to indicate men of royal descent, “Prince”.

사주: [sa-joo] fortunetelling.

관상: [gwan-sang] physiognomy

간택: [gan-tek] process of choosing the partner of a king, prince or princess.

기간제: [gi-gan-jeh] temporary; contract position.

수능: [soo-neung] university entrance examination.

낙하산: [nak-ha-san] parachute; derogatory term for person benefiting from nepotism.

등골을 빨아먹는다: [deung-gol-eul-ppal-ah-muk-neun-da] literally “to suck out someone’s spine”; to use someone for material gain without reciprocating.

Audio credits:

Hans Zimmer – “Dunkirk” – “The Mole”

DO YOU HAVE FEELINGS? Judy, Linda and Teresa are less than thrilled with the finale of “Vagabond” (배가본드), an SBS action "thriller" starring Lee SeungGi and Suzy.

Sorry that Judy sounds like she's recording in a cave. We may eventually need to get proper mixing equipment for our microphones.

For the season finale of a drama that made such a big deal about how badass the main character is, the action scenes are rather lackluster . Judy is extremely disappointed that Dalgeon (Lee SeungGi) didn't kill someone with his lucky bullet necklace. COME ON! Obviously the producers were angling for a second season, but we are not feeling optimistic.

We are looking forward to our "First Impressions" episode! We will be checking out "Crash Landing On You" (사랑의 불시착), "Chocolate" (초콜릿), "Black Dog" (블랙독) and "Queen: Love and War" (간택 - 여인들의 전쟁), so join us for what is sure to be a rant fest!

Digressions (spoiler free):

1:15 - Listener E-mails and new patrons!

8:44 – “1917”

9:53 – “Train to Busan”

11:20 – “The Witcher” season 1

13:10 – “Little Women”

14:19 - “Cells at Work!” (Hataraku Saibo)

15:45 - "Live"

Audio credits:

Jang Young-Gyu, Lee Byung-Hun & Choi Tae-Hyun – “Train to Busan” – “Busan Title”

Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli – “The Witcher” – “The Wolf's Path”

TIME IS RUNNING OUT. CRAM IN ALL THE SPONSORS. Judy, Linda and Teresa are yelling at the screen during episodes 11-14 of “Vagabond” (배가본드), an SBS action thriller starring Lee SeungGi and Bae Suzy.

PLEASE NOTE: We talk briefly about the portrayal of a suicide attempt in the drama from 48:46-50:00.

Everything about the bereaved family members is killing Judy with cheesiness. Linda attempts to explain the difference between legal and illegal lobbying. Teresa wonders if piggyback rides are common in Korea. We are disappointed with the NIS still being weirdly incompetent. How is Co-Pilot's Wife (Kang KyungHun) doing more spy stuff than anyone else in this drama?

Digressions:

1:15 - Listener E-mails and new patrons!

5:12 – “Crash Landing On You”

10:33 – “Black Dog”

12:13 – “The Mandalorian” (spoiler free)

13:24 – “Jumanji: The Next Level”

14:04 - “Clean With Me” videos on Youtube

Some Korean terms:

미래: [mi-reh] future.

사랑: [sa-rang] love.

일: [il] work.

미사일: [mi-sa-il] missile.

한옥: [han-ok] traditional Korean house.

DON'T THINK ABOUT IT. Judy, Linda and Teresa are forced to suspend their disbelief for episodes 7-10 of “Vagabond” (배가본드), an SBS action thriller starring Lee SeungGi and Bae Suzy.

Teresa is still struggling to accept the wackiness of this drama, whereas Judy and Linda have embraced it wholeheartedly. Judy is annoyed that the drama has pulled a switcheroo with Haeri (Bae Suzy); instead of an "Alias"-like competent spy, we have a novice agent who gets ignored by her team. Linda alleges that Suzy fans want to see her in the same approachable girl-next-door roles forever. Let her grow as an actor, for heaven's sake!

We have so many questions this episode:
1) Why is Haeri so obsessed with high-fives?
2) Why are the President and Prime Minister comparing pee streams? Is this a common thing men do?
3) Why does Subway have a pizza sub? What's it like? Someone eat it and tell us!

Glossary of nicknames we've given to some characters:
Chief Sadsack - Chief Gang (Lee GiYoung), the bespectacled ally/mentor for Haeri.
Sadface (aka Rockface) - Chief Gi (Shin SungRok), the rules-obsessed NIS officer who is maybe the second lead of this drama
Scarface - Jerome (Yoo TaeOh), the assassin who blows up the plane.

Digressions:
2:30 - When the Camellia Blooms
5:46 - Listener E-mail!
1:01:33 - Why are eggs so important in Korea?
1:21:37 - Pizza Sub, the newest abomination from Subway

Some Korean terms:
썸: [sseom] flirting without commitment.
짓이기다: [jit-ni-gi-da] to crush violently.

Audio credits:
Michael Giacchino - "Alias" - Theme Song

EVERYTHING HAPPENS. Judy, Linda and Teresa whirl through episodes 3-6 of “Vagabond” (배가본드), an SBS action thriller starring Lee SeungGi and Bae Suzy.

This week, we are introduced to a whole slew of characters. Will they live up to their potential? As goofy as this drama is, DalGeon (Lee SeungGi) is doing his best to remind us that the impetus for all of his actions is grief for his nephew. We're curious how good Haeri's (Bae Suzy) Arabic is, so if any of our listeners speak Arabic, let us know!

Now that we're getting more and more into the drama, it's time to start giving characters nicknames! Here's a glossary so far:

Chief Sadsack - Chief Gang (Lee GiYoung), the bespectacled ally/mentor for Haeri.

Sadface (aka Rockface) - Chief Gi (Shin SungRok), the rules-obsessed NIS officer who is maybe the second lead of this drama?

Scarface - Jerome (Yoo TaeOh), the assassin who blows up the plane.

Digressions:

1:35 - We watched one episode of "Love Alarm"

3:28 - We binged the first episode of "Derry Girls"

4:45 - Listener E-mails!

8:03 - Minnesota, the 11th Canadian province?

1:06:21 - When to switch from formal to informal Korean

Some Korean terms:

대한민국, 그렇게 허술하지 않아: [dae-han-min-gook-geu-rut-keh-huh-sool-ha-ji-an-ah] "Korea isn't that lax", which is very different from "Your country [Korea] has what it takes."

싸가지 없어: [ssa-ga-ji-up-suh] impolite; lacking in manners.

Audio credits:

Tearliner Feat. Love x Stereo - “Love Alarm OST” - "In My Dreams"

Cranberries – “Dreams”

We're back from our extended summer break!

Judy, Linda and Teresa are having so much fun with episodes 1-2 of “Vagabond” (배가본드), a SBS action thriller starring Lee SeungGi and Bae Suzy.

We were hooked on this show from the very beginning. The action sequences are great and the lead actors are compelling. There are so many twists and turns that you absolutely must pay attention. If you haven't started already, we highly recommend it!

Digressions:

1:31 - Borderlands 3

3:11 - The Outer Worlds

6:08 - Maurice Druon’s “The Accursed Kings” series

6:56 - Dr. Stone

8:06 - Star Trek: Voyager

9:54 - Re-introduction to Linda!

1:08:24 - What K-dramas are coming out in November?

Audio credits:

Justin E. Bell – “The Outer Worlds” – “Main Menu Theme”

Welcome to K-Drama My Eyes Out!

For the past three years, we’ve been doing deep dives into Korean dramas and we’re back with a new format, with all three hosts (Judy, Linda and Teresa) recording together for the very first time! We hope to bring you a bit of insight into Korean culture, history and subtext in dialogue that may have been lost in translation.

Join us every other week as we gush, rant, and come up with the wackiest theories. K-Drama My Eyes Out is available on Apple Podcasts, Google Play Music, Libsyn, Stitcher and Spotify. You can also follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @kdramamyeyesout.

Linda is back as a special guest, and she forced Judy to watch the first episode of "Arthdal Chronicles" (아스달 연대기), a TVN drama starring Song JoongKi, Kim JiWon and Jang DongGun.

"WHY?" is the predominant question. Why does this look so cheap if it cost over $50million? Why is the conlang so lazily un-Korean if this is meant to be set in an ancient Korea? Why is this episode 80 minutes if they spend most of it on dumb things instead of establishing important plot points? Why are they doing such a bad job of ripping off more interesting and successful shows and movies?

Some Korean terms:

사람: [sa-ram] human.

정을 나누다: [jeong-eul-na-noo-da] an old fashioned way of saying "to make love"; literally "to share love".

항아리: [hang-ah-ri] clay jar.

미세먼지: [mi-seh-meon-ji] microdust; it's a worrisome environmental issue in Korea.

That's how this ends? Judy and Teresa were deflated by episodes 33-36 of “My Fellow Citizens!” (국민여러분!), a KBS2 drama starring Choi SiWon, Lee YooYoung and Kim MinJung.

Things we needed from the final week of this drama but didn't get:

1) SangJin (Tae InHo) to actually face his feelings for MiYeong (Lee YooYoung), not suck at it and be an actual human about it.

2) The backstory of the violent relationship between Sister #1 (Baek JiWon), Chairwoman (Kim MinJung) and Lawyer Sister (Ahn EunJin) and the resolution of that conflict, one way or the other.

3) JungGuk (Choi SiWon) and MiYeong working through their problems and reaching a mature decision, one way or the other.

4) A satisfying conclusion for the Chairwoman, who was our favourite character, for heaven's sake! She didn't deserve such a limp ending to her story.

Digressions:

0:55 - "Divinity: Original Sin II"

1:42 - "The Lonely Island Presents: The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience"

3:17 - Teresa checked out "Arthdal Chronicles". Our special Mini-episode will be released in July!

Some Korean terms:

사기꾼: [sa-gi-ggoon] con artist.

사랑꾼: [sa-rang-ggoon] love artist.

Penultimate week! Judy and Teresa zip through episodes 29-32 of “My Fellow Citizens!” (국민여러분!), a KBS2 drama starring Choi SiWon, Lee YooYoung and Kim MinJung.

Guys, remember how the Chairwoman (Kim MinJung) is our favourite character and we were waiting forever for the showdown between her and Sister #1 (Baek JiWon)? And also looking forward to the mysterious Sister #3 (Yoon JooHee) and what she's capable of?

SIGH.

We'll be taking a small break from weekly episodes for the months of July and August! There will be Mini-Episodes from time to time while we deal with some life stuff, so please look out for those. We'll have some special guests!

Digressions:

0:49 - We absolutely loved "Always Be My Maybe"

Judy and Teresa were okay with episodes 25-28 of “My Fellow Citizens!” (국민여러분!), a KBS2 drama starring Choi SiWon, Lee YooYoung and Kim MinJung.

We were very annoyed to find out that "My Fellow Citizens!" is now under the Viki Pass Plus. We hope that it's not hindering your ability to watch the rest of it and listen to our episodes.

This week wasn't as strong as last week in terms of meaningful interactions between characters. It did have a lot of physical gags, which were admittedly fun. Finally, JungGuk's sister (Park KyungHye) contributes to the drama by being pretty amazing. Why is she a con artist, again?

Digressions:

0:53 – Listener e-mail!

7:24 – "Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion" (コードギアス 反逆のルルーシュ)

8:34 – Korean meal etiquette

Some Korean terms:

성: [seong] last name.

Remember when we had such high hopes for Sharon? Judy and Teresa were excited by episodes 21-24 of “My Fellow Citizens!” (국민여러분!), a KBS2 drama starring Choi SiWon, Lee YooYoung and Kim MinJung.

This week is full of great scenes between supporting characters that build them up as actual people with their own motivations, rather than mannequins that come to life when the camera turns to them. Judy feels vindicated that someone else has finally noticed that SangJin (Tae InHo) has feelings for MiYeong (Lee YooYoung). Will JungGuk (Choi SiWon) ever tell MiYeong about his con man past or will it all blow up in his face?

Digressions:

2:56 – “Dark” (TV series)

3:55 - "Game of Thrones" (no spoilers)

7:16 - Red Dead Redemption 2

Some Korean terms:

범생이: [beom-seng-ee] derogatory version of "모범생" [mo-beom-seng], which means "model student".

Judy and Teresa wish they could be as cool as the Chairwoman in episodes 17-20 of “My Fellow Citizens!” (국민여러분!), a KBS2 drama starring Choi SiWon, Lee YooYoung and Kim MinJung.

The Viki translators say that having a flower behind one's ear implies that someone is crazy? This is the first time that Judy's heard about this.

The Chairwoman (Kim MinJung) reveals her actual plan, which makes more sense than turning a con man into an assemblyman. Why do Korean elections involve so many high schoolers and also, dancing? MiYeong (Lee YooYoung) continues to ignore people who blatantly tell her that her husband's a con man.

Digressions:

0:46 - "Mary and the Witch's Flower"

3:18 - "Pokemon Detective Pikachu"

4:50 - Red Dead Redemption 2

6:53 - "Drunk History"

Some Korean terms:

기러기아빠: [gi-ruh-gi-ah-ppa] literally "goose father"; term for fathers left behind in Korea while the mothers and children move overseas for education purposes.
