Now displaying: Category: What's Wrong With Secretary Kim
Aug 29, 2018

Let's be honest. There were some nonsensical bits in this finale week. In spite of this, Judy and Teresa were pleasantly satisfied with episodes 15-16 of “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim” (김비서가 왜 그럴까), a TVN drama starring Park MinYoung and Park SeoJoon.

What is this salty discharge? Judy was openly crying at multiple scenes this week, while Teresa was comparatively unaffected. We were annoyed that Miso (Park MinYoung) seems uninterested in her own damn wedding and even more that the writers didn't spend enough exploring the reasons why. How did the writers wrangle us into rooting for Newbie Secretary (Pyo YeJin) and One Suit Man (Chansung)?

If you like the song that Youngjoon (Park SeoJoon) sings for his proposal, it's a really lovely song from 1987 by Yoo JaeHa called "You in my bosom" (유재하 - 그대 내 품에). Click here to listen to it.

Next week is our 100th episode and second anniversary! We went on a double date with Robert and David to the Korean Harvest Festival for some delicious food (check out our Instagram for pics). We also recorded a special episode about the 2017 Korean film, "Along With The Gods: The Two Worlds".

Digressions:

6:04 - Teresa cried at an episode of "Buffy"

37:00 - Teresa's harebrained scheme to train raccoons

Some Korean terms:

시월드: [shi-wol-deu] a wife's new living conditions of being put upon by your in-laws; a play on "Seaworld".

품절남/품절녀: [poom-jeol-nam/poom-jeol-nyeo] "Sold out man" or "sold out woman" to indicate people who are now in a relationship and therefore "off the market".

반품남/반품녀: [ban-poom-nam/ban-poom-nyeo] "Returned man" or "returned woman" to indicate people whose relationships have ended.

청심환: [cheong-shim-hwan] traditional herbal medicine that's used as an anxiolytic.

"Buffy" Season 3,  Episode 20 – “The Prom”

Miracle of miracles! Did we actually beat the Penultimate Week Syndrome? Judy and Teresa are pretty happy with episodes 13-14 of “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim” (김비서가 왜 그럴까), a TVN drama starring Park MinYoung and Park SeoJoon.

Judy is still channelling evil mother-in-law against One Suit Man (Chansung) and Newbie Secretary's (Pyo YeJin) budding relationship. Teresa is annoyed with Youngjoon's (Park SeoJoon) clinginess in episode 13 and needs him to turn down the unintended creep factor. Lipstick Lady (Hwang BoRa) is impressing us more and more. Just think about how much her character has come since the first week!

There was a cameo this week by Jung YuMi as Youngjoon's childhood friend. This actress was in a reality show called "Youn’s Kitchen 2" (윤식당2) with Park SeoJoon. It's so relaxing. Check it out on Viki, especially if you like Park SeoJoon!

Digressions:

46:54 - Teresa's childhood proposal. We want to know if any of you guys have any cute stories of proposals from your childhood!

Will somebody please get these characters a psychiatrist for heaven's sake? Judy and Teresa are puzzled by episodes 11-12 of “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim” (김비서가 왜 그럴까), a TVN drama starring Park MinYoung and Park SeoJoon.

Secretary Yang (Kang HongSeok) and Lipstick Lady (Hwang BoRa) are our favourite relationship this week. Somehow we don't think this was supposed to happen, but how can we help it when Youngjoon (Park SeoJoon) and Miso (Park MinYoung) are regressing all of a sudden? We also worry about the potential of President Park (Kang KiYoung) and Secretary Seol (Ye Won) becoming another couple, because what else can this drama possibly throw at us? They already eliminated Morpheus (Lee TaeHwan) as the main antagonist!

Digressions:

34:10 - Kdramas keep suggesting that arm pillows are romantic for some reason. We're here to tell you that arm pillows are the worst.

43:52 - Oh wait, are lullabies even worse?

Some Korean terms:

성기: [sung-gi] genitals.

아저씨: [ah-juh-ssi] a way of addressing an older man who is not a relative.

Did you guys love that closet kiss or what? Judy and Teresa are intrigued by episodes 9-10 of “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim” (김비서가 왜 그럴까), a TVN drama starring Park MinYoung and Park SeoJoon.

What is wrong with the family members of our lead characters? Youngjoon's (Park SeoJoon) shady family urgently needs a therapist, while Miso's (Park MinYoung) sisters need to check their attitudes. This week is saved by the absolutely great closet kiss (you know the one) and Secretary Yang (Kang HongSeok) making progress with Lipstick Lady (Hwang BoRa).

Judy refuses to watch the new kdrama, “Time”, if only for the fact that Kim JungHyun continues to be sourfaced in it. Teresa tried the first two episodes of “Come and Hug Me” and was intrigued by it. Judy is still watching and loving “Lawless Lawyer”.

Digressions:

0:48 - Domino's in Korea

29:28 - Teresa's childhood nickname

38:08 - Judy explains the finer points of "Oppa"

47:25 - Why do Koreans love crabs in soy sauce so much?

55:23 - Traditional Korean medicine method of pricking one's finger for indigestion. This method of treating indigestion is not scientifically verified and therefore not recommended.

56:56 - Judy feels embarrassed for One Suit Man (aka Chansung from the boy group, 2PM). See the music video for "Heartbeat", which is now 8 years old!!! and Teresa swoons over Secretary Yang's (Kang HongSeok) singing. Please click here to watch a clip of Kang HongSeok on "Immortal Song".

1:02:36 - Cameo by Jung SoMin and Lee JoonKi (from "Beause This Is My First Life"). If you want to know which KDMEO episode Teresa's talking about, it's our Episode 68! Check it out if you want to hear a lot of ranting!

Some Korean terms:

씨: [ssi] a suffix you add to a person's name to indicate formality; the Japanese equivalent would be "san".

Yaaass, take charge, Miso! Judy and Teresa start off hangry but eventually applaud episodes 7-8 of “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim” (김비서가 왜 그럴까), a TVN drama starring Park MinYoung and Park SeoJoon.

Why is Morpheus (Lee TaeHwan), a famous author, such a petulant antagonist instead of a being a shady wit? Where are his versions of Shakespearean burns? Judy theorizes that absolutely no one in this universe knows how to flirt, not just Youngjoon (Park SeoJoon) and Miso (Park MinYoung). Prepare yourselves for Teresa's wacky theory about the kidnapping incident.

Digressions:

43:21 - "The Classic", 2003 film starring Son YeJin and Jo InSung. Click here to watch the music video for the movie.

We seriously need to invest in claw machines. Judy and Teresa are feeling better about episodes 5-6 of “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim” (김비서가 왜 그럴까), a TVN drama starring Park MinYoung and Park SeoJoon.

How can you go through life as a Korean and not know the simple joys of instant ramen? For shame!!! Judy realizes why she is so against Morpheus (Lee TaeHwan) and proves herself to be a terrible person. So far, the drama is doing an excellent job at balancing the mystery with romance and we're very hopeful that this continues!

Digressions:

6:00 - The finer points of ramen

44:04 - Devil's goddamn advocates

55:13 - Teresa dislikes Ted Mosby

55:38 - We need a lead for fresh pork rinds

Some Korean terms:

넌 아무것도 못해: [nun-ah-moo-gut-do-mot-heh] "You can't do anything"; Youngjoon (Park SeoJoon) uses the informal "you" instead of using the title "hyung" (older brother), which emphasizes just how little respect he has for Morpheus .

기억하개: [gi-uk-ha-geh] a play on "기억하게", meaning "(I want you to) remember" and "개" [geh], meaning "dog".

Are neckties a fetish thing now? Judy and Teresa squirm through episodes 3-4 of “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim” (김비서가 왜 그럴까), a TVN Kdrama starring Park MinYoung and Park SeoJoon.

Judy wants to try out a new portmanteau, "squort". It's a combination of "squeal" and "snort", to be used in situations that are corny but also make you squeal with delight.

Judy and Teresa furrow their eyebrows at the physically nonsensical way that Miso (Park MinYoung) keeps falling on top of Youngjoon (Park SeoJoon), especially because if it wasn't these two characters in this exact situation, there would be lawsuits and calls to HR. Judy can't believe that a novelist is getting mobbed by fans at the airport. We are introduced to Youngjoon's older brother, Morpheus (Lee TaeHwan), and refuse to learn his actual name.

Digressions:

3:25 - Rollercoasters

11:09 - Sometimes Kdrama tropes work!

1:18:49 - Cowboy Bebop

Some Korean terms:

수고했소: [soo-go-het-so] an older form of saying "수고했다" [soo-go-het-da], meaning "You've worked hard"; "소" [so] is a homonym of "cow", hence the cow doll.

고귀남: [go-gwi-nam] shortened form of "고귀한 남자" [go-gwi-han-nam-ja], meaning "a noble man".

넘사벽: [num-sa-byuk] shortened form of "넘을 수 없는 사차원의 벽" [num-eul-soo-up-neun-sa-cha-won-eui-byuk], meaning "a wall you can never cross despite your efforts"; lipstick lady uses this term in the episode to describe Youngjoon.

뇌섹남: [nwe-sek-nam]: shortened form of "뇌가 섹시한 남자" [nwe-ga-sek-see-han-nam-ja], meaning "a man whose brain is sexy".

킹카: [king-ka]: outdated slang for "the most popular man"; was mostly used in schools.

퀸카: [queen-ka] outdated slang for "the most popular woman"; was mostly used in schools.

We have to learn new names now! Judy and Teresa are elated with their choice of “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim” (김비서가 왜 그럴까), a TVN drama starring Park MinYoung and Park SeoJoon.

Judy loves the cadence of Youngjoon (Park SeoJoon) and Miso's (Park MinYoung) conversations. Teresa feels bad for Youngjoon, because he doesn't seem to have any social skills outside of business. Judy makes a bold prediction about the mysterious "Oppa" from Miso's childhood!

Digressions:

3:14 - Nose bridge?

26:45 - Judy and Teresa pander to nonexistent sponsors

53:05 - Teresa discovers a new...fetish?

Some Korean terms:

드럽게 재수없어요: [deu-rup-geh-jeh-soo-up-suh-yo] "hella obnoxious".

끌어내: [ggeul-uh-neh] "drag him/her/it away".

꼬마야: [ggoh-mah-yah] way of calling to a "little child".

Yes, it was a tight race last week between this drama and "Lawless Lawyer" (무법변호사). We are watching "Lawless Lawyer" on the side and it's nice to just enjoy something without worrying about taking notes for recording.
