WISHING EVERYONE A FABULOUS 2024! Judy and Linda struggle to make sense of  episodes 13-16 of "Strong Girl Nam Soon" (힘쎈여자 강남순), the JTBC drama, starring Lee YooMi, Ong SeongWoo, and Kim JungEun.

We're going to shake off the bad vibes of this drama with the remnants of 2023 and go forward into 2024 with "Daily Dose of Sunshine" starring Park BoYoung!

Digressions:

1:34 - Listener E-mails!

12:01 - Linda is halfway through the final season of "The Crown" and is feeling ill at ease with the relative proximity of the events.

14:29 - Judy is absolutely hooked on 2023 Game of the Year, "Baldur's Gate 3". There will be future updates on her character's relationship with Astarion, the hot vampire Elf, whether listeners want it or not!

19:58 - Linda is so far down the Park HyungSik rabbit hole that she's watching "Hwarang", despite the Go ARa-ness of it all.

Some Korean terms:

사극: [sa-geuk] historical drama.

한강: [han-gang] Han River.

Audio credits:

Hans Zimmer - "The Crown" - "Main Title"

Borislav Slavov - "Baldur's Gate 3" - "Main Theme Part I"

IT'S FARTY TIME. Judy and Linda continue their voluntary self-torture by covering episodes 7-12 of "Strong Girl Nam Soon" (힘쎈여자 강남순), the JTBC drama, starring Lee YooMi, Ong SeongWoo, and Kim JungEun.

If this drama has such high ratings, how come we don't have 23.7 million listeners?

Some Korean terms:

나 잡아봐라: [nah-jab-ah-bwa-rah] "Try to catch me!"; this used to be a cringey cliche from Korean dramas in the 80s.

여인천하: [yeo-in-cheon-hah] literally "women's world"; "Ladies of the Palace", a 2001 sageuk about Queen Munjeong; it's one of Judy's favourites and Kim JungEun is terribly hammy in that as well!

10억: [ship-eok] one billion.

힘쓰지마: [him-sseu-ji-ma] "Don't use your strength".

평: [pyeong] measurement of area; 1평 = 3.31m^2 = 35 sq ft; therefore 60평 = 199m^2 = 2100 sq ft

WOMEN DELIVERY PEOPLE? NO F-ING WAY. Judy and Linda continue ranting about episodes 3-6 of "Strong Girl Nam Soon" (힘쎈여자 강남순), the JTBC drama, starring Lee YooMi, Ong SeongWoo, and Kim JungEun.

I struggled so hard with the headline for this episode. Here are the other candidates:
WE'RE CALLING HIM "LIVER TRANSPLANT" FROM NOW ON.
HIS NAME IS BREAD SONG?!?!?
WHERE'S THE CUTE? YOU GOT A BOYBANDER.
WOW, SO MANY WHITE PEOPLE.

Digressions:

1:30 - "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" was great, but sadly didn't get enough attention. Check it out on Netflix for a fun, easy watch!

2:36 - Judy didn't realize that she would get so into "Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators", but the documentary series does a great job of giving the cast the spotlight they deserve.

5:01 - "Renfield" is a weird gory movie about Dracula's put upon familiar. Nicolas Cage is his wacky self and Nicholas Hoult is great, as usual.

Some Korean terms:

간이식: [gan-ee-sik] liver transplant; sounds like 강희식 [gang-hee-sik].

빵: [ppang] bread.

군소: [goon-so] sea hare.

Audio credits:

Lorne Balfe - "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" - "Thick As Thieves"

Snap! - "Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators" - "The Power"

Marco Beltrami - "Renfield" - "Renfield Blues"

THAT'S NOT HOW SCIENCE WORKS! Judy and Linda dive straight into the first two episodes of "Strong Girl Nam Soon" (힘쎈여자 강남순), the JTBC drama, starring Lee YooMi, Ong SeongWoo, and Kim JungEun.

Sorry we had to abandon the First Impressions episode, but we really wanted to pick a drama and just delve into it, instead of demurring any longer. We are going to try our best to record every two weeks, we swear!

Digressions:

1:17 - New Patreon donor and Listener E-mail!

18:55 - DID YOU KNOW JO JINWOONG WAS IN EPISODE 1 OF "The Good Bad Mother" (나쁜엄마)? Judy squees.

26:34 - "Behind Your Touch" (힙하게) is utterly dumb. The punny name isn't even the worst part.

33:33 - Judy watched one episode of "My Lovely Liar" (소용없어 거짓말), starring Kim SoHyun. Good for the production team for swinging a Maserati sponsorship somehow?

36:36 - "The Devil's Plan" (데블스 플랜) is a Korean reality show, featuring brain games. Judy liked "The Genius" better, but is hopeful that future seasons will become more interesting.

41:17 - ***SPOILER ALERT*** Judy watched "Ahsoka" on Disney+, and was less than impressed.

Some Korean terms:

미안해요: [mi-an-heh-yo] "Sorry".

입맞춤: [ip-mat-choom] kiss.

뽀뽀: [ppo-ppo] peck, smooch.

비둘기: [bi-dul-gi] pigeon.

미친거 아냐?: [mi-chin-geo-ah-nyah] "Are you crazy?"; "Has it gone mad?"

힙하게: [hip-ha-geh] coolly.

한강: [han-gang] Han River.

무당: [moo-dang] shaman.

Audio credits:

Kevin Kiner - "Ahsoka" - "End Credits"

Judy and Linda are classy this week as they discuss the final two episodes of "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon" (힘쎈여자 도봉순), starring Park BoYoung, Park HyungSik and JiSoo.

Judy is jealous that Bongsoon (Park BoYoung) can cry so much without getting snotty. Linda develops an interesting backstory for the kidnapper that could turn the whole drama on its head. Minhyuk (Park HyungSik) is even more "inspired" than in previous episodes, which amuses Judy and Linda to no end.

Korean term:

양은냄비: [yang-eun-nem-bi] nickel-silver pot.

Our next episode is going to be a "First Impressions" episode, where we talk about "Signal", "Chief Kim", "Fight My Way", "Suspicious Partner", "Ruler: Master of the Mask" and "Seven Days Queen".

This week, Judy and Linda are unexpectedly concise as they talk about episodes 13 and 14 of of "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon" (힘쎈여자 도봉순), starring Park BoYoung, Park HyungSik and JiSoo.

Linda and Judy roll their eyes as Bongsoon (Park BoYoung) and Minhyuk (Park HyungSik) break up for like 10 minutes, because the writers are desperately trying to kill time. Judy scoffs at the "lacy sleeve tighteners". If you want to know what those are, check out our Facebook page or Twitter! Linda completely skipped over all the extraneous material involving the gangsters or the mysterious monk and yet missed absolutely nothing of importance.

Some Korean terms:

은인: [eun-in] saviour.

야: [ya] "Hey!".

If you had superpowers and had a secret weakness, would you tell your friends, like Linda or keep it to yourself, like Judy?

This week, Judy and Linda raise their eyebrows while watching episodes 11 and 12 of of "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon" (힘쎈여자 도봉순), starring Park BoYoung, Park HyungSik and JiSoo.

Judy and Linda discuss the..."excitement" that Park HyungSik conveys as his character and how that's not often portrayed in K-dramas. Judy needs a new English word that describes when you snort derisively at something while secretly loving it at the same time. In case you guys don't know about the 1990s show, "Xena: Warrior Princess" starring Lucy Lawless, click here to see the opening credits. It has bonus Karl Urban, who has not aged a goddamn day. If you guys have never watched the 1985 mini-series, "Anne of Green Gables", click here to watch a beautiful scene in which Anne (Megan Follows) and Gilbert (Jonathan Crombie) finally become friends.

Some Korean terms:

지적인: [ji-juk-in] intellectual.

도를 닦다: [do-reul-dak-da] to seek enlightenment.

능구렁이: [neung-goo-rung-ee] Asian king snake; used to describe an untrustworthy person; "snake in the grass".

If you found sanitary napkins in your workplace bathroom, would you automatically assume that they were an amenity provided by the company? Would you actually use it?

Judy and Linda watched episodes 9 and 10 of "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon" (힘쎈여자 도봉순), starring Park BoYoung, Park HyungSik and JiSoo.

Linda teaches us an interesting fact about Admiral Nelson! Judy accuses Gookdoo (JiSoo) of having fewer facial expressions than Legolas (Orlando Bloom) in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movie franchise. Those are some fightin' words. We also extol our virtues as potential English consultants and editors.

Some Korean terms:

새끼: [se-kki] bastard; Bongsoon's mom (Shim HyeJin) pronounces it as "시끼" [shi-kki].

저팔계: [juh-pal-gye] pig-like character in "Journey to the West"; Chinese name is Zhu Bajie.

건데기: [gun-de-gi] particles.

If you had a life-size horse statue, would you sit on it everyday? Is Judy the only one? Hello?

Judy and Linda are at the midway point! We watched episodes 7 and 8 of "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon" (힘쎈여자 도봉순), starring Park BoYoung, Park HyungSik and JiSoo.

Judy and Linda absolutely adore the swept back hairstyle that Minhyuk (Park HyungSik) sports to the shareholders meeting.  We finally discover the culprit behind Minhyuk's stalker, but there are no consequences! Where is the comeuppance? The drama tries to imply that Gookdoo (JiSoo) has feelings for Bongsoon (Park BoYoung), but it is so out of the blue that it's more laughable than touching. Judy has a meltdown when Bonggi (Ah WooYeon) says that he can tell that Minhyuk isn't gay from a "medical perspective".

Some Korean terms:

호두과자: [ho-doo-gwa-ja] walnut (ho-doo) cake (gwa-ja).

불닭발: [bool-dak-bal] spicy chicken feet.

파김치: [pa-gim-chi] green onion kimchi.

부추김치: [boo-choo-gim-chi] dill kimchi.

센치: [sen-chi] shortened form of "sentimental".

빨리빨리: [ppal-li-ppal-li] "hurry hurry".

방구: [bang-goo] fart.

Judy and Linda talk about episodes 5-6 of "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon" (힘쎈여자 도봉순), starring Park BoYoung, Park HyungSik and JiSoo.

We briefly discuss our first impressions of the new drama, "Man to Man" starring Park HaeJin, Park SungWoong and Kim MinJung. If you want to avoid spoilers, please skip the section between 03:39-09:27.

If you thought we were hard on Gookdoo (JiSoo) last week, brace yourselves because we are not letting up in this episode. Judy and Linda tug on their collars (is that a phrase?) as they discuss the homogeneous society in Korea and the racism that results from such insularity. There may be some fist shaking at the ineptitude of the fictional police officers.

Some Korean terms:

국: [gook] soup.

놀고있네: [nol-go-it-neh] literally "Look who's playing around"; more appropriately "Are you kidding me?"

잘자요: [jal-ja-yo] "Sleep well"; This is how Sung SiKyung, a singer and radio host, used to end his radio show.

자전거: [ja-jun-guh] bicycle.

못타: [mot-ta] "can't ride".

Have you started watching "Man to Man" yet? How did you feel about it? Are Judy and Linda justified in their hatred of Gookdoo? Do you find him gentlemanly or just condescending?

Judy and Linda are catty this week as they talk about episodes 3-4 of "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon" (힘쎈여자 도봉순), starring Park BoYoung, Park HyungSik and JiSoo.

Park BoYoung and Park HyungSik are doing excellent work carrying this drama, considering that our feelings toward the supporting characters range from annoyance to downright hostility. That's right, Gookdoo (JiSoo), Heeji (Seol InA) and Bonggi (Ah WooYeon). We care nothing for your lukewarm "love" triangle. Don't even get us started on the weirdo gangster boss (Lim WonHee).

Some Korean terms:

비빔면: [bi-bim-myun] wheat noodles mixed with vegetables and a spicy sauce.

잔치국수: [jan-chi-gook-soo] "banquet noodles"; wheat noodles in anchovy broth.

전교일등: [jun-gyo-il-deung] describes the student who has the top marks of the entire school.

여왕병: [yuh-wang-byung] "queen syndrome".

Are we too harsh on Gookdoo (aka #BlackholeOfCharisma)? Has anyone started watching the new drama, "Man to Man"?

This week, Judy and Linda are talking about the first two episodes of "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon" (힘쎈여자 도봉순). This JTBC drama stars Park BoYoung, Park HyungSik and JiSoo.

If this drama is trying to force a love triangle of some kind, it has to do a lot better than this, because Judy and Linda both find Minhyuk (Park HyungSik) more likable and interesting than Gookdoo (JiSoo). What sort of name is that anyway? After watching Park BoYoung in "A Werewolf Boy" (see KDMEO Episode 8!), Judy was apprehensive about watching this drama, but Bongsoon is so unexpectedly fun and sassy! Linda loves the cartoony visual effects and hopes that they continue for the rest of the series.

Some Korean terms:

아장아장: [a-jang-a-jang] adverb to describe walking in short steps, like a toddler.

싸가지 없어: [ssa-ga-ji-up-suh] impolite; lacking in manners.

국수: [gook-soo] noodles.

What did you think of "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon"? Were you also confused by the creepy murdering kidnapper storyline? Please send suggestions, comments and questions to us on Facebook and Twitter (@kdramamyeyesout) and via e-mail!
