Judy and Linda are finally back to catch up on some e-mails and give their First Impressions of "The Glory" (더 글로리), "Under the Queen's Umbrella" (슈룹), and "The Interest of Love" (사랑의 이해).

The next episode will be about season 2 of "D.P." (Deserter Pursuit), starring Jung HaeIn, Koo KyoHwan, Son SeokKoo and Kim SungKyun.

Sorry about audio issues with Judy's microphone!

Digressions:

2:43 - New Patreon donors and Listener E-mails!

33:40 - Judy recently played the "Resident Evil 4" remake, and had such a fun time fighting zombies and ineffectively flirting with hotties. You can check out VOD of her playthrough on Youtube.

37:04 - Linda has caught up on all seasons of "The Crown", and needs everyone to go to therapy.

39:28 - Linda also watched both "Enola Holmes" movies, and had a fun time. If only there was more of Henry Cavill!

40:53 - ***SPOILER ALERT*** Gasp! Linda is actually watching a K-drama? She started off liking "See You in My 19th Life" (이번 생도 잘 부탁해), but is not liking that the main characters have already gotten together.

46:01 - "The Interest of Love" (사랑의 이해) is a JTBC drama starring Yoo YeonSeok and Moon GaYoung, as bank staff who can't be together for some reason. I just typed that and immediately yawned.

54:46 - "Under the Queen's Umbrella" (슈룹) is a Netflix sageuk, starring Kim HyeSoo and Kim HaeSook. Judy was heartily annoyed by historical inaccuracies and Linda was simply bored.

59:53 - Finally, we talk about the revenge saga, "The Glory" (더 글로리) starring Song HyeKyo and Lim JiYeon. As bingeworthy as it was at the time of airing, the ending unfortunately left a bad taste in our mouths. If anyone at Netflix is paying attention, we don't need a second season of Song HyeKyo and Lee DoHyun getting revenge on the guy in jail, thanks. For an infinitely better revenge tale, read "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas (the unabridged version, Judy insists).

Some Korean terms:

아줌마: [ah-jum-ma] way to address an older woman.

o: [ee-eung] In "The Glory", the character of Lim JiYeon's mother is named 홍영애. In Korean fortunetelling, both "ㅎ" and "ㅇ" count as the same letter, which made her the most dangerous to Lim JiYeon, according to the shaman.

선배: [seon-beh] person in an organization with more experience; opposite of "후배" [hoo-beh].

Audio credits:

2PM - "Heartbeat"

Kota Suzuki - "Resident Evil 4" (2023) - "Baile de la Muerte"

Hans Zimmer - "The Crown" - "Main Title"

INCEST? IS IT INCEST?!  It's a Girls' Generation-themed episode, featuring "If You Wish Upon Me" (당신이 소원을 말하면) starring SooYoung, "Jinxed At First" (징크스의 연인) starring SeoHyun and "Good Job" (굿잡) with YuRi.

Digressions:

2:05 - New Patreon donor and Listener E-mails!

20:40 - For Halloween, Judy streamed "Call of Cthulhu", a 2018 game on her Twitch channel (twitch.tv/ladyjutea). For eldritch horror that makes you question your perception of reality, check it out!

22:40 - Linda finished season 3 of "Derry Girls" and is sad that the show is done! When will we get another fun nostalgic show?

24:02 - Judy and Linda suddenly become variety show experts and critique "Young Actors' Retreat" (청춘MT).

32:15 - Linda is very into IU's music right now. It's very good! There's nothing else to say about that.

34:03 - "If You Wish Upon Me" (당신이 소원을 말하면) is a feel good drama from KBS, and stars SooYoung, Ji ChangWook and Sung DongIl. It is literally our favourite out of the three we checked out. Good for you, SooYoung!

44:09 - "Good Job" (굿잡) is a heist drama, starring YuRi and Jung IlWoo. All we have to say about this show is: EAGLE VISION.

55:32 - "Jinxed At First" (징크스의 연인) is a fantasy ?romance from KBS2, starring SeoHyun and Na InWoo. It is one of the most nonsensical things we have ever seen.

1:12:05 - We skim through the list of kdramas coming out in November and are unimpressed.

Some Korean terms:

내숭: [neh-soong] coy.

천재: [cheon-jeh] genius.

Audio credits:

Markus Schmidt - "Call of Cthulhu" - "Hospital #3"

Spice Girls - "Who Do You Think You Are"

IU - "Lilac"

YOWZA. ANYONE ELSE NEED CHEERING UP? Judy and Linda watched a bunch of kdramas for spring First Impressions!

For our next episode, we're going to watch 2018's "Little Forest" (리틀 포레스트), starring Kim TaeRi, Ryu JunYeol and Moon SoRi.

Digressions:

1:38 - Listener E-mails!

12:13 - Judy and Linda were properly destroyed by "Encanto" from Pixar.

15:11 - "Malcolm in the Middle" is on Disney+ and Judy loves it so much.

16:26 - Judy tried out "Search: WWW" (검색어를 입력하세요 WWW) and is intrigued.

17:52 - "Business Proposal" (사내 맞선) is an SBS romantic comedy based on a webtoon, which started off promising but then devolved into typical trope-y nonsense. Kim SeJeong, Seol InAh and Kim MinGyu are fantastic and we will continue to follow their work, but the latter half of this was decidedly disappointing.

25:07 - "Our Blues" (우리들의 블루스) is a TVN series in omnibus format, about a small community in Jeju Island. The massive cast is crammed with so many talented actors and we're looking forward to learning more about their characters' individual stories.

37:25 - You can't get any fluffier than "Shooting Stars" (별똥별), a TVN series starring Lee SungKyung and Kim YoungDae. It's an easy watch, if you just want to watch Lee SungKyung being charming as heck.

44:38 - "My Liberation Notes" (나의 해방일지) is a super relatable  and depressing drama from JTBC, starring Kim JiWon, Lee El, Lee MinKi and Son SeokKoo. Don't get us wrong. The cast is wonderful and we are loving it, but wow does it get us down.

Some Korean terms:

사극: [sa-geuk] historical drama.

기러기 아빠: [gi-reo-gi-ah-ppa] literally "goose father"; term for fathers left behind in Korea while the mothers and children move overseas for education purposes.

형님: [hyung-nim] respectful way of addressing older male friends from men.

뭐라고 하지: [mweo-ra-go-ha-ji] "Whaddya call it".

Audio credits:

Lin-Manuel Miranda - "Encanto" - "Waiting On A Miracle"

They Might Be Giants - "Boss Of Me"

AH, THE PASSION OF YOUTH! Judy and Linda feel hopeful after trying out some new February K-dramas.

Digressions:

0:57 - Listener E-mails!

13:49 - Judy was expecting more Henry Cavill sword fighting from the second season of "The Witcher".

17:09 - Linda watched the second season of "Sweet Magnolias" which is a bit cloying but easy to digest.

19"02 - Judy loves Ali Wong and her latest comedy special, "Don Wong" is out on Netflix!

21:23 - "Forecasting Love and Weather" (기상청 사람들: 사내연애 잔혹사 편) is a JTBC drama set at the Korean Meteorological Administration, of all places. It stars Park MinYoung and Song Kang. It's gotta be funded by KMA, seeing as how they love showing montages of why accurate weather prediction is so important? And graphs. So many graphs.

38:25 - "Twenty-Five, Twenty-One" (스물다섯 스물하나) is a TVN drama with strong "Reply 1988" vibes. It stars Kim TaeRi and Nam JooHyuk as bright-eyed youths against the background of the 1990s IMF crisis. They are an absolute delight to watch.

50:30 - "Thirty, Nine" (서른, 아홉) stars Son YeJin, Jeon MiDo and Kim JiHyun as a strong-knit group of friends. This TVN slice-of-life drama also has 3 male leads, but who really cares about them? The leading ladies have great chemistry and we're looking forward to what's going to happen next.

Some Korean terms:

불륜남: [bool-lyoon-nam] adulterer (male).

Audio credits:

Joseph Trapanese - "The Witcher: Season 2 OST" - "Kaer Morhen"

Nickel Creek - "Destination"

KDMEO, WE DON'T KNOW DRUGS. Judy and Linda stall for fall by watching four ridiculously popular Kdramas from 2004-2013! How is every single one of these about a poor dumdum uncovering a rich douchebag's heart of gold?

We will be hibernating for December, in hopes that we'll get some dramas worth checking out in 2022. Happy holidays and happy New Year!

Digressions:

1:51 - New Patreon donor and Listener E-mails!

14:14 - On a whim, Judy tried out "Inspector Koo" (구경이), starring Lee YoungAe. It's pretty watchable and has a great supporting cast.

16:51 - "The Handmaiden" (아가씨) is a hauntingly memorable film. It was directed by Park ChanWook, who also directed the Vengeance series of films.

18:27 - A notorious dictator is dead! Judy celebrated by watching "A Taxi Driver" (택시운전사), a 2017 film about the 1980 Gwangju Uprising.

21:03 - "Arcane" is a Netflix animated series based in the "League of Legends" universe and is an amazing show, even if you have never played the video game.

22:36 - Judy has been walking down the anime nostalgia lane with the 2019 series, "Fruits Basket" (フルーツバスケット). Ignore the stereotypical shoujo fantasy premise and focus on the message about friends, family and helping each other heal from trauma.

25:21 - "The Heirs" (왕관을 쓰려는 자, 그 무게를 견뎌라 – 상속자들) is an SBS drama from 2013, starring Lee MinHo, Park ShinHye, Kim JiWon and Kim WooBin. Ah yes, rich people problems and English-speaking "actors", Judy's favourite things in a drama.

35:50 - "Princess Hours" (궁) is a 2006 MBC drama set in an alternate universe in which Korea has a constitutional monarchy. It stars Yoon EunHye, Ju JiHoon and Song JiHyo. Yoon EunHye is playing pretty much the same character as in "Coffee Prince", a spunky girl who has to save her family from poverty.

43:17 - "Master's Sun" (주군의 태양) is a 2013 SBS drama, starring So JiSub and Gong HyoJin. Linda didn't manage to finish the episode, so Judy struggles to recap the latter half, which is absolutely bonkers.

54:30 - "Full House" (풀하우스) is a 2004 KBS drama, starring Rain and Song HyeKyo. Words cannot adequately express just how awful this drama was. How was this so popular?

Some Korean terms:

흙수저: [heuk-soo-jeo] literally "dirt spoon" as compared to "silver spoon"; from an impoverished background.

알바: short for 아르바이트 [ah-reu-bah-ee-teu]; taken from German word, "arbeit", meaning "work"; minimum wage job.

미숫가루: [mi-soot-ga-roo] mixed grain powder that is usually blended with water, ice and sugar to make a summer drink.

범생: [beom-seng] short for "모범생" [mo-beom-seng], meaning "model student".

가채: [ga-che] intricate traditional wig worn by women.

한복: [han-bok] traditional Korean clothing.

사극: [sa-geuk] historical drama.

눈치: [noon-chi] a combination of "tact" and "situational awareness"; to be lacking in "눈치" is an insult.

모자라다: [mo-ja-ra-da] "to be not enough"; "to be slow" if used to describe a person.

제수씨: [jeh-soo-ssi] respectful way of addressing the significant other of a younger brother/friend.

Audio credits:

TRPP - "Inspector Koo" (구경이) OST - "Yeah (Round and Round)"

Jo YeongWook - "The Handmaiden" (아가씨) OST - "The Tree from Mount Fuji"

Cho HyeWon - "A Taxi Driver" (택시운전사) OST - "The Customer I Left Behind" (두고 온 손님)

Imagine Dragons - "Arcane" - "Enemy"

Beverly - "Fruits Basket" (フルーツバスケット) - "Again"

WARNING - THE LAST 15 MINUTES IS BASICALLY RIFFING. Judy and Linda stall for fall by watching four classic Kdramas from 2000-2010!

Next week, we continue to stall for fall by trying out "Full House" (풀하우스), "Princess Hours" (궁), "Master's Sun" (주군의 태양) and "The Heirs" (왕관을 쓰려는 자, 그 무게를 견뎌라 – 상속자들).

Digressions:

1:22 - New Patreon donor!

1:40 - Judy, like a fool, thought that she could just enjoy the candy-coloured Pixar movie, "Luca" without crying. Check it out!

6:01 - "Autumn in My Heart" (가을동화) is a ridiculously popular KBS melodrama from 2000, starring Song SeungHun, Song HyeKyo and Won Bin. Who knew we would scream so much while watching it?

17:53 - "Winter Sonata" (겨울연가) is the next offering from the creators of "Autumn in My Heart". Bae YongJun and Choi JiWoo are decidedly not young enough to play teenagers, but here we are. If you want to visit Nami island, the tourist attraction that Linda talks about, it's only about 50km away from Seoul!

28:02 - "Coffee Prince" (커피프린스 1호점) is a MBC reverse harem drama, starring Gong Yoo, Yoon EunHye and Lee SunKyun. Gong Yoo's character is your typical rich pretty boy who mooches off his family, while Yoon EunHye's character is more spunky and fun!

35:07 - "My Girlfriend is a Gumiho" (내 여자친구는 구미호) is a 2010 SBS fantasy drama. Lee SeungGi's character is a poor imitation of Gong Yoo's character from "Coffee Prince". Shin MinAh proves that she has always been frigging gorgeous.

Some Korean terms:

시장: [shi-jang] marketplace.

국밥: [guk-bap] meat and vegetable stew with rice.

과학고: [gwa-hak-go] science high school.

Audio credits:

Dan Romer - "Luca" - "Meet Luca"

HE'S A HACKER, QUESTION MARK?! Judy and Linda try out newer dramas for Fall 2021.

We decided to give "D.P." (Deserter Pursuit), starring Jung HaeIn, Koo KyoHwan and Kim SungKyun, its own KDMEO episode. Coming soon!

Digressions:

0:47 - New Patreon donors and Listener E-mails!

11:39 - Judy insists that you watch "Seinfeld", now on Netflix, but only from season 2 onwards.

14:29 - Let season 2 of "The Baby-Sitters Club" give you a warm, comforting hug.

15:49 - "Far Cry 6" is out! Judy is new to the franchise and is eager to acquire the so-called Battle Chicken, but will it be enough to stave off the post-Mass Effect depression?

19:04 - Linda really enjoyed "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings", reminiscent of beautiful martial arts movies of old.

23:37 - "Yumi's Cells" (유미의 세포들) is a TVN drama, starring Kim GoEun and An BoHyun. It's based on a 2015 webtoon, which may have been amusing, but the animated bits slow down the pace way too much. Kim GoEun's bangs and An BoHyun's chin scruff are distractingly awful.

30:29 - "Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha" (갯마을 차차차) is a TVN romantic comedy, starring Shin MinA and Kim SeonHo. Judy remembers the 2004 movie with much fondness. This is an easy watch with two adorable lead actors, so try it out!

39:24 - "Police University" (경찰수업) is an eyeroll-inducing piece from KBS. It stars JinYoung (B1A4), Krystal (f(x)) and Cha TaeHyun, and they can't do anything to help the godawful material.

Some Korean terms:

답답하다 [dap-dap-ha-da] to be frustrated.

뽑기 [ppop-gi] candy made with sugar and baking soda; currently super popular due to "Squid Game".

Audio credits:

Jonathan Wolff - "Seinfeld Theme"

Potty Mouth - "I Wanna"

DJ Shadow - "Nobody Speak"

Joel P West - "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" - "Xu Shang-Chi"

"Jurassic Park" - "It's a UNIX system! I know this..."

DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO BUILD A SNOWMAN AFTER A MURDER? Judy and Linda try out newer dramas for Spring 2021.

We're taking a short break! Think of us in cocoons dreaming of the second season of "Hospital Playlist" (슬기로운 의사생활). We'll be back here and there, if there's anything fun that comes out.

Digressions:

0:47 - Listener E-mails!

11:13 - Judy offers up a correction for episode 169: "As quickly as a lie"

12:54 - Vox has great informative videos on Youtube, but their Coronavirus playlist is particularly important. Please check it out for reliable information from experts.

14:36 - Linda is hooked on Wendy's (Red Velvet) first mini-album, but especially the song, "When This Rain Stops"

16:34 - Judy is fascinated with the documentary series about a single mom in Korea on SayuriTV

20:33 - Linda watched the second season of "Stranger" and was okay with it.

22:18 - Judy loves "Battlestar Galactica" (2004) so much. Even though it's sci fi, it's grounded in real human concerns and asks what it means to be human and whether we are worth redeeming.

25:33 - We had a watch party with our Patreon donors for the first episode of "Sisyphus" (시지프스) and it was only bearable because of the snarky company.

32:46 - "Mouse" (마우스) is a thriller from TVN, starring Lee SeungGi and Ahn JaeWook. The crimes were graphic and difficult to watch, but we also couln't take the drama seriously because of some pointedly stupid choices.

48:23 - "Vincenzo" (빈센조) is a TVN action comedy thriller (?) that is tonally all over the place. Song JoongKi plays a Korean-Italian mafia consigliere. We were hoping for a straight up revenge story, but there's some corporate shenanigans mixed with "Kung Fu Hustle"-esque cast of kooky characters. Linda's going to watch more of it though!

54:19 - "Navillera" (나빌레라) is yet another TVN slice of life drama. It stars Park InHwan as the most adorable elderly man who longs to learn ballet dancing, and Song Kang as an aspiring ballerino who's going to teach him. It's so predictable, but in a good, heartwarming way.

Some Korean terms:

거짓말처럼:[geo-jit-mal-cheo-reom] literally "like a lie"; unbelievably.

어처구니없어: [eo-cheo-goo-ni-up-suh] absurd.

Audio credits:

Wendy (Red Velvet) - "When This Rain Stops"

Bear McCreary - "Battlestar Galactica" - "Season 1 Title Intro"

T. Rex - "I Love to Boogie"

BEHOLD LINDA'S FURY. Judy and Linda try out older dramas suggested by our Patreon donors. Thank you for prompting us to try out shows that were on the back burner.

Our Spring First Impressions episode will feature "Sisyphus: The Myth" (시지프스), "Vincenzo" (빈센조), "Mouse" (마우스), "Navillera" (나빌레라) and "River Where the Moon Rises" (달이 뜨는 강).

Digressions:

2:43 - New Patreon donors and Listener E-mails!

6:39 - STOP AAPI HATE.

16:21 - Judy is uplifted by the "Feel the Rhythm of Korea" videos from Korea Tourism Organization. Check them out here!

20:46 - *NO spoilers* We're having fun watching "Falcon and the Winter Soldier"!

22:41 - Judy enjoyed the female friendships in "Hustlers". Jennifer Lopez, WOWZA.

24:46 - Linda rewatched "Little Women" and liked it better than the first time.

26:15 - Judy likes Andy Samberg and she likes "Palm Springs"

28:51 - Linda is loving the lightness of "The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers" series on Disney+

31:57 - "My Mister" (나의 아저씨) is a depressingly realistic drama from TVN (2018), starring IU and Lee SunKyun. There's excellent acting all round and Lee SunKyun's voice is delectable, but we were so crushed by the experience that we don't know if we can continue.

41:44 - "Stranger" (비밀의 숲) is a 2017 TVN drama about - surprise, surprise - corruption in the justice system. It stars Cho SeungWoo as a partially lobotomized (?!) prosecutor and Bae DooNa as a kickass detective!

47:59 - We were both surprised by how much we liked "Melo is My Nature" (멜로가 체질), a 2019 JTBC slice of life drama about a group of friends in their 30s. If you haven't seen it yet, you should check it out for the witty banter and touching moments.

56:39 - "You're Beautiful" (미남이시네요) is a 2009 SBS drama from Park ShinHye, Jang GeunSuk and Lee HongKi. It's part of the terrible trend in the 2000s where every romantic comedy tried to be "Boys Over Flowers".

Some Korean terms:

거짓말처럼 빠르게: [geo-jit-mal-cheo-reom-ppa-reu-geh] as quickly as a lie; expression used for something that's fast.

끔찍해:  [ggeum-jjik-heh] horrible.

판소리: [pan-so-ri] traditional Korean singing.

해녀: [heh-nyeo] traditional Korean women divers.

Audio credits:

LEENALCHI (이날치) - Tiger is Coming (범 내려온다)

Henry Jackman - "Falcon and the Winter Soldier" - "Louisiana Hero"

Cardi B - "Money"

Alexandre Desplat - "Little Women" Soundtrack - "Little Women"

Patrick Cowley - "Megatron Man"

Philip Glass - "Koyaanisqatsi"

OOF. Judy and Linda were pretty disappointed by the scant selection of K-dramas this winter. We did find an unexpected gem, though!

Digressions:

1:08 – Listener E-mails! We get listener feedback on “Bridgerton”, and the terrible dramas we watched for Episode 163!

18:46 – Linda started watching "Youn's Stay" (윤스테이), a spin-off of the variety show, “Youn’s Kitchen” (윤식당) . We hope it becomes accessible to non-Korean speaking viewers soon!

25:21 – Judy scratched her H.P. Lovecraft itch by watching "Color Out of Space" (2019) starring Nicolas Cage.

27:30 – Judy continues her Nicolas Cage run with the Netflix series, "History of Swear Words"!

29:16 - "Run On" (런온) is a JTBC romantic comedy (???), starring Im SiWan, Shin SeKyung and SooYoung (Girl's Generation). As predicted, SooYoung is the best part about this drama, but we're not about to watch hours of something just for 5 minutes of catty fun.

39:43 - "True Beauty" (여신강림) is a godawful TVN drama based on a webtoon (sigh). It stars Moon GaYoung and Cha EunWoo. It's basically "My ID is Gangnam Beauty" all over again, but makeup instead of plastic surgery! We HATED all the characters in this.

48:05 - "The Penthouse" (펜트하우스) is an absolutely bonkers drama from SBS, starring Eugene (S.E.S) and Kim SoYeon. Can you believe this was our second choice?

1:04:39 - "Lovestruck in the City" (도시남녀의 사랑법) is a uniquely crafted drama from KakaoTV, and stars Ji ChangWook and Kim JiWon. Judy liked the natural acting in the slice-of-life flashbacks of the characters, while Linda was annoyed by the forced premise and lack of plot.

1:15:03 - "The Uncanny Counter" (경이로운 소문) was a last minute addition to this episode. It's an OCN supernatural comedy, starring Jo ByungGyu, Kim SeJeong, Yoon JoonSang and Yeom HyeRan. The news that the writer dropped out in episode 13 is very concerning to us, but so far we are enjoying the chemistry between the characters!

Some Korean terms:

한옥: [han-ok] traditional Korean house.

구미호: [goo-mi-ho] nine-tailed fox.

발연기: [bal-yeon-gi] bad acting; literally "foot acting".

Colin Stetson - "Color Out of Space" OST - "Contact"

"Guardians of the Galaxy" - Literal Drax scene

MY GOD, MY GOD WHAT HAVE WE DONE? Well, we finally did it, folks. We watched the three dramas we swore we would never watch, and we did it for you! [through gritted teeth] HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Digressions:

5:29 - New Patreon donors and Listener E-mails! Our listener, Liz, sent us a link to the Youtube video of the K-Pop Festival. Check it out!

10:08 - Judy snobbily watched the first season of "Bridgerton", the hot new Shondaland drama

16:12 - Linda is watching "Start-Up" (스타트-업)!

18:13 - "How Are You Bread" (하와유브레드) is a 2020 web drama starring Suho (EXO) and Lee SeYoung. It's so utterly cookie-cutter (see what I did there?) and bad, but we finally know how they chose the baffling title!

35:57 - "My ID is Gangnam Beauty" (내 아이디는 강남미인) is a 2018 JTBC drama starring Im SooHyang and Cha EunWoo (ASTRO). Judy is mad at literally everything in this drama, but Linda suggests that that might be the actual intention of this awful drama.l

47:33 - "Cool Guys, Hot Ramen" (꽃미남 라면가게) is a 2011 TVN drama starring Jung IlWoo and Lee ChungAh based on a web novel. It's so patently trying to be "Boys Over Flowers", but it's even more boring and problematic. The goofy title sadly does not pay off.

For our Winter 2021 First Impressions, we'll be watching "Run On" (런온), "Lovestruck in the City" (도시남녀의 사랑법), "The Penthouse" (펜트하우스) and "True Beauty" (여신강림). Should be...interesting?

Some Korean terms:

떡 장인: [ddeok-jang-in] rice cake artisan.

조선: [jo-seon] Korean dynasty from 1392 to 1897

도련님: [do-ryeon-nim] old Korean address for "young master".

한옥: [han-ok] traditional Korean house.

머슴: [meo-seum] male servant in olden times.

안부: [an-boo] greeting.

슈퍼마켓: [shu-peo-ma-ket] Koreanization of "supermarket"; closer to a corner store than a big grocery store"

어학연수: [eo-hak-yeon-soo] language training.

얼굴천재: [eol-gool-cheon-jeh] literally "face genius"; a good-looking person.

Audio credits:

Jerry Goldsmith - "Mulan (1998) - "Short Hair"

Seinfeld S9E3 - "The Serenity Now"

WELCOME TO SEASON 4 OF K-DRAMA MY EYES OUT!

Judy, Linda and Teresa are excited to talk about the hottest Korean dramas of Fall 2020!

Digressions:

1:40 - New Patreon donors and Listener E-mails!

7:37 - ***SPOILERS*** Follow-up on "It's Okay to Not Be Okay" (사이코지만 괜찮아)

20:45 - Judy did NOT finish "Was It Love" (우리, 사랑했을까)

23:51 - Teresa tried out some slice of life animes: "A Place Further than the Universe" (宇宙よりも遠い場所), "Laid-Back Camp" (ゆるキャン△)

25:14 - Linda watched the controversial "Emily in Paris"

28:33 - Judy is hooked on the unapologetically Canadian "Murdoch Mysteries"

33:01 - Linda discovered that Park SoDam does not make "Cinderella and the Four Knights" (신데렐라와 네 명의 기사) worth watching

39:03 - Seriously, what is up with Subway?

35:58 - "Record of Youth" (청춘기록) is a TVN drama about chasing your dreams and stars Park BoGum, Park SoDam and Byeon WooSeok. Linda wishes that it had more interesting material for Park BoGum and Park SoDam to sink their teeth into.

56:07 - "The School Nurse Files" (보건교사 안은영) is a super quirky Netflix original series based on a Korean web novel. It stars Jung YuMi and Nam JooHyuk as refreshingly normal-looking staff at a high school. BUFFY VIBES, said everyone at the Netflix party we hosted.

1:03:40 - "Tale of the Nine Tailed" (구미호뎐) is a glossy supernatural series starring Lee DongWook and Jo BoAh. Lee DongWook is excellent as a world-weary nine-tailed fox who gave up his powers for love. Can it be as good as Goblin?

1:25:40 - "Private Lives" (사생활) is a JTBC drama that lured us in with SeoHyun from Girls' Generation and Go GyungPyo. What we wanted and expected was a sexy show about con artists doing heists. What JTBC says it's giving us is something about corporate corruption? We'll probably keep watching for SeoHyun's wigs and outfits and Go GyungPyo's boyish good looks.

Some Korean terms:

여우고개: [yeo-oo-go-gae] fox mountain pass.

Audio credits:

Masato Nakamura - "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" - "Emerald Hill"

SURPRISE EPISODE! Judy and Linda jibber jabber about "It's Okay to Not be Okay" (사이코지만 괜찮아), a TVN drama starring Seo YeJi and Kim SooHyun.

Listener e-mails sometimes work, you guys! Linda and I happened to be watching this drama and decided to record about it. Teresa is enjoying the well-deserved summer break. We tried our best to keep our jibber jabber to ***VERY MILD SPOILERS***.

Digressions:

1:59 - New Patreon donor and Listener E-mails!

4:38 - Why not try a relaxing Korean reality show like "Hyori's Homestay"?

16:52 - Judy tried out "Was It Love?" (우리, 사랑했을까)

20:42 - Linda's also hooked on "Schitt's Creek"!

23:08 - Some of our favourite kpop songs from this summer

Audio credits:

CHUNG HA - "Stay Tonight"

Red Velvet - Irene & Seulgi - "Naughty"

ZICO - "Summer Hate" (Feat. Rain (비))

Red Velvet - Irene & Seulgi - "Monster"

It's our Winter 2020 First Impressions episode! Strap yourselves in, because we didn't prepare any notes! On purpose!

Digressions:

1:57 – We hear from one of our Patreon patrons!

3:54 – “Dunkirk”

8:04 – “Chocolate” (초콜릿) is a JTBC romantic comedy starring Ha JiWon and Yoon KyeSang. This is giving us major “Hospital Ship” vibes, which is a terrible thing. Judy and Teresa have a hell of a time trying to tell characters apart. Poor poor Ha JiWon.

30:26 – “Queen: Love and War” (간택: 여인들의 전쟁) is a period drama from TV Chosun, which is a broadcasting station that none of us have heard of. It stars Kim MinGyu and Jin SeYun. Teresa is worried that she picked this drama to cover, but it was so wacky that we were weirdly hooked.

57:37 – “Crash Landing On You” (사랑의 불시착) is a TVN drama starring Son YeJin and Hyun Bin. As with most TVN dramas, this is in dire need of some ruthless editing. Judy can’t believe Linda and Teresa were willing to try this drama even though the main character ends up in North Korea BECAUSE OF A TORNADO.

1:17:58 – “Black Dog” (블랙독) is a ensemble piece from TVN, starring Seo HyunJin as a new teacher trying to muddle through her first job. Linda gives us an insider look into contract teacher positions in Korea.

1:40:36 - What's coming out in February? What will we cover next?

Some Korean terms:

군: [koon] suffix used to indicate men of royal descent, “Prince”.

사주: [sa-joo] fortunetelling.

관상: [gwan-sang] physiognomy

간택: [gan-tek] process of choosing the partner of a king, prince or princess.

기간제: [gi-gan-jeh] temporary; contract position.

수능: [soo-neung] university entrance examination.

낙하산: [nak-ha-san] parachute; derogatory term for person benefiting from nepotism.

등골을 빨아먹는다: [deung-gol-eul-ppal-ah-muk-neun-da] literally “to suck out someone’s spine”; to use someone for material gain without reciprocating.

Audio credits:

Hans Zimmer – “Dunkirk” – “The Mole”

Linda is back as a special guest, and she forced Judy to watch the first episode of "Arthdal Chronicles" (아스달 연대기), a TVN drama starring Song JoongKi, Kim JiWon and Jang DongGun.

"WHY?" is the predominant question. Why does this look so cheap if it cost over $50million? Why is the conlang so lazily un-Korean if this is meant to be set in an ancient Korea? Why is this episode 80 minutes if they spend most of it on dumb things instead of establishing important plot points? Why are they doing such a bad job of ripping off more interesting and successful shows and movies?

Some Korean terms:

사람: [sa-ram] human.

정을 나누다: [jeong-eul-na-noo-da] an old fashioned way of saying "to make love"; literally "to share love".

항아리: [hang-ah-ri] clay jar.

미세먼지: [mi-seh-meon-ji] microdust; it's a worrisome environmental issue in Korea.

Audio credits:

Patrick Doyle – “Thor” – “Sons of Odin”

Hans Zimmer – “Gladiator” – “Now We Are Free”

Howard Shore - "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" - "Rivendell"

It's time for Second Impressions! We've selected the following four dramas to see if the second episodes live up to their promise.

6:16 - Kim HyeJa, Han JiMin and Nam JooHyuk continue to tug at our heartstrings in the JTBC drama, "Radiant" (눈이 부시게). If only we weren't so annoyed by the time turner plot holes! Judy is surprisingly more positive about this show than Teresa.

21:10 - "My Fellow Citizens!" (국민여러분!) is a lighthearted KBS2 drama starring Choi SiWon, Lee YooYoung and Kim MinJung. Teresa is worried that the fun con artist/heist concept may get derailed by the politics. Judy is excited by all the powerful female characters, but weirded out by the politician stepbrother who shows up out of the blue.

33:53 - In the second episode of "Touch Your Heart" (진심이 닿다), Yoo InNa and Lee DongWook's characters are learning more about each other and developing a respectful relationship. It is definitely full of kdrama tropes, but we are liking it so far. If you want to watch the original Ghana chocolate commercial, click here. Judy thought Ghana chocolates weren't a thing anymore, but apparently they're still around!

44:34 - "Possessed" (빙의) is an OCN drama starring Go JoonHee and Song SaeByeok. This episode establishes some rules about seeing spirits, which may make it difficult to use the psychic's powers to actually solve any crime. The detective is so thoughtful and considerate that we're liking him more and more.

Digressions:

1:10 - Teresa has betrayed her Horde roots in "World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth"

2:54 - "HOMECOMING: A film by Beyonce"

4:17 - "The Death of Stalin"

41:56 - Are hugs a Canadian thing?

Some Korean terms:

파김치: [pa-kim-chi] kimchi made with green onion ("pa")

붕어빵: [boong-uh-ppang] koi-shaped bread filled with sweet red beans; popular street food in Korea.

Audio credits:

Glenn Stafford, Neal Acree, Sam Cardon, Clint Bajakian, David Arkenstone and Jason Hayes  - “World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth” – “Before the Storm”

Beyonce – “Homecoming: The Live Album” – “Welcome”

Apr 24, 2019

We genuinely enjoyed all three dramas that we selected for springtime first impressions this week.

Digressions:

1:05 - "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" Part 2

1:39 - "The Umbrella Academy"

3:21 - "Love, Death & Robots"

8:36 - "Doctor Prisoner" (닥터 프리즈너) is a KBS medical (?) drama, starring Nam GoongMin, Kim ByungChul, Kwon NaRa and Choi WonYoung. The term that comes most to mind about this show is "overwrought". The ER doctor/oncologist/neurosurgeon/OBGYN played by Nam GoongMin is so very good! The rich, illegitimate, drug-using douchebag played by Choi WonYoung is so very bad! In spite of all this, we genuinely enjoyed the cheesiness. Too bad you can't watch the rest of it for 300-something days if you don't feel like paying for Viki Pass Plus.

27:02 - "My Fellow Citizens!" (국민여러분!) is a lighthearted KBS2 drama starring Choi SiWon, Lee YooYoung and Kim MinJung. It's refreshing to see a story about a married couple who have drifted apart and will have to find their way back to each other. The con artist husband versus detective wife conflict somehow elevates the whole thing to a new level of fun!

45:45 - We selected "Possessed" (빙의) on a pure whim, to be honest. It's an OCN drama starring Go JoonHee and Song SaeByeok as an unlikely team who uses psychic abilities to catch a serial killer. Despite its very meh show premise, the excellent writing and production values make it definitely worth checking out.

Next week, we are doing second impressions for the following four dramas: "Radiant" (눈이 부시게), "Touch Your Heart" (진심이 닿다), "My Fellow Citizens!" and "Possessed". Which will be our final pick for spring 2019?

Audio credits:

Jeff Russo - "The Umbrella Academy" – “The Umbrella Academy”

Woo HyeMi & Innovator – “Doctor Prisoner” – “Fearless”

Hyungdon & Daejune (형돈이와 대준이) - "My Fellow Citizens!" - Yadannatdaya (야단났다야)

Springtime First Impressions continue! This week's theme is "flummoxed".

4:53 - The second season of "Go Go Waikiki" (aka "Welcome to Waikiki" aka 으라차차 와이키키) starts off as a major disappointment. We wish JTBC had given up on the whole enterprise when they realized that they had only Lee YiKyung to work with. Believe us when we say that we really liked his character in the first season, but he has completely crossed over the line into caricature territory.

19:56 - "The Fiery Priest" (열혈사제) is an SBS drama about a priest, a prosecutor and a detective forming a team to bring down corruption in their city. It stars Kim NamGil, Honey Lee and Kim SungKyun. It was difficult to pay attention to the corruption plot when characters are eating black bean noodles (jajangmyun, 짜장면) every other scene.

32:57 - "The Item" was an unexpected delight from MBC, starring Joo JiHoon, Jin SeYeon and Kim KangWoo. There was definitely enough tension and mystery to keep our interest, but more importantly, we want to recommend this to you based on our theory that the main villain is a secret vampire.

Next week, we're checking out "Possessed" (빙의), "Doctor Prisoner" (닥터 프리즈너) and "My Fellow Citizens!" (국민 여러분!).

Springtime First Impressions continue! Horsey air kiss!

Digressions:

1:15 - "Fargo", the 2014 TV series

3:42 - "Turn: Washington's Spies"

6:44 - "Borderlands 3" news! Hype hype hype!

Some Korean terms:

다모: [da-mo] female investigator in ancient Korea; literally "tea lady". One theory of the title's etymology is that these investigators may have been recruited from tea rooms in Koryo dynasty as spies.

해치: [hae-chi] also known as "haetae" (해태); an East Asian mythological animal that was said to be able to look into one's heart and know of evil doings. For a minor infraction, it would butt you with its horns, but for an unforgivable sin, it would eat you whole.

9:40 - "He is Psychometric" (사이코메트리 그녀석) is a TVN drama starring Park JinYoung (from GOT7), Shin YeEun and Kim Kwon. We were hoping for crime solving, not high school drama shenanigans. Some of the characters were strangely callous about the fact that they were dealing with murder victims. The police officers continue to be predictably terrible at their jobs.

24:44 - "Radiant" (눈이 부시게) is a relatable drama from JTBC. It stars Kim HyeJa, Han JiMin and Nam JooHyuk. Han JiMin plays a sadsack character who has realized that she won't be able to achieve her dream of becoming an announcer, but is too afraid to abandon it. Nam JooHyuk is so much better at playing a down-to-earth character (see: Joonhyung from "Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo) than a standoffish jerk (see: Habaek from "Bride of the Water God").

38:10 - "Haechi" (해치) is a historical drama based around the succession struggles of King Yeongjo, who ruled Joseon from 1724 to 1776. This SBS drama stars Jung IlWoo, Go ARa, Kwon Yul and Park Hoon, who portray an unlikely group of people who will fight corruption and help Prince YeonIng ascend the throne. As with any historical drama based on actual people, Judy fell into a Wikipedia hole.

Next week, we're talking about "The Item" (아이템), "Go Go Waikiki" (으라차차 와이키키) season 2, and "The Fiery Priest" (열혈사제)!

Audio credits:

Jeff Russo – “Fargo” (2014) – “Main Theme”

Joy Williams, Matt Berninger and Charlie Peacock –“ Turn: Washington’s Spies” – “Hush”

GRiZ (ft. Tash Neal of The London Souls) – “Can’t Hold Me Down”

Kim HyungSuk – “Radiant” – “Be Dazzling

Apr 3, 2019

It's time to check out the kdrama selection of spring 2019!

Digressions:

1:34 - "The Girl on the Train"

2:04 - "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra

4:49 - First up is "Legal High" (리갈하이) from JTBC. It's a comedy (?) starring Jin Goo and Seo EunSoo as two lawyers who are conplete opposites, but must work together to win cases. Jin Goo plays a smarmy golddigger, who is completely different from his beloved character from "Descendants of the Sun".

20:45 - "Romance is a Bonus Book" (로맨스는 별책부록) is from TVN, starring Lee NaYoung and Lee JongSuk. Lee NaYoung gave us all of the feels as a dejected woman at the end of her rope, and Lee JongSuk plays her old childhood friend who's been repressing his feelings for her. Trust us when we say that it's way better than the sparse description available on Netflix. Screw Cinderella!

41:49 - Fans of "Goblin" were looking forward to Yoo InNa and Lee DongWook's reunion in "Touch Your Heart" (진심이 닿다), another TVN drama. Judy was suspicious that this was a money grab using the two actors' popularity, but was pleasantly surprised by the humour and the cast of secondary characters.

Next week, we'll be talking about "He Is Psychometric" (사이코메트리 그 녀석), "Radiant" (눈이 부시게) and "Haechi" (해치).

A philosophical question: what constitutes an obstacle? Judy and Robert's heads are spinning at episode 5 of "Memories of the Alhambra" (알함브라 궁전의 추억), a TVN drama starring Park ShinHye and Hyun Bin.

Wait, this whole thing has only been two days so far? We still feel no sympathy for Jinwoo (Hyun Bin), who only now realizes that he caused the death of Hyungseok (Park Hoon), aka Dead Automobile. Heejoo (Park ShinHye) continues to be dumbest character.

TVN, why couldn't you just embrace the fact that this show is ridiculous and just go all in on the wacky?

Some Korean terms:

소설쓰고 자빠졌네: [so-seol-sseu-go-ja-ppa-jeot-neh] literal approximation of "You've fallen down writing a novel"; "--하고 자빠졌네" is an expression used to deride someone's actions.

차: [cha] homonym for "car" and "tea".

Girl, you're a millionaire now. Put down the toilet phone! Judy and Robert get tipsy as they ramble about episode 3 of "Memories of the Alhambra" (알함브라 궁전의 추억), a TVN drama starring Park ShinHye and Hyun Bin.

We have to give credit where it's due. Could it be that all of the flaws in the video game were actually intended by the screenwriter to hint at an interesting twist in this "magical" game?

Of course, the "magic" that Hyun Bin's character keeps talking about seems to be basically money.

Digressions:

Teresa, come back and save Judy! Join Judy and Robert for this super casual chat in which they struggle to focus on second episode of "Memories of the Alhambra" (알함브라 궁전의 추억), a TVN drama starring Park ShinHye and Hyun Bin.

This episode really didn't do anything to make us like Hyun Bin's douchebag CEO character. We were hopeful for Park ShinHye's character for a split second until she went back to grovelling, just because she finds out he's rich. We just wanted more dorky, nonsensical video game bits.

Digressions:

1:35 - "The Good Place"

3:20 - "Tidying Up With Marie Kondo"

6:15 - New Year's resolutions, mebbe

Happy New Year! Judy is joined by special guest, Robert, to talk about the first episode of "Encounter" (남자친구), yet another TVN winter drama starring Park BoGum and Song HyeKyo.

Robert is surprised that this show is also from TVN, seeing as how it's shot and edited exponentially better than "Memories of the Alhambra". Judy is annoyed that the main obstacle to the main characters' romance can be summed up with #RichPeopleProblems. Robert suspects Park BoGum's character of having sinister stalker-y intentions.

Digressions:

1:50 - Bonus rant about "Memories of the Alhambra" (알함브라 궁전의 추억) episode 2

9:08 - "Hilda", animated series on Netflix

Audio credits:

"Frasier" Season 4,  Episode 10 – “The Virgin”

Georges Auric – Roman Holiday – "Main Title"

Teresa is off this week, so we're taking a break from "Ms Ma, Nemesis". Judy is joined by special guest, Robert, to discuss the first episode of "Memories of the Alhambra" (알함브라 궁전의 추억), a TVN drama starring Park ShinHye and Hyun Bin.

Judy wonders if listeners suggested this kdrama, just to listen to some class A ranting. Robert tries to figure out how to make this AR (augmented reality) game actually profitable instead of the technologically impressive dumpster fire it is.

Digressions:

1:52 - Unravel Two

2:57 - Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales

4:48 - Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency season 2

Audio credits:

Frida Johansson and Henrik Oja - Unravel Two – "Tema 1"

Marcin Przybyłowicz - Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales – "Thronebreaker (Main Theme)"

Cristobal Tapia de Veer - Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - "Opening Theme"

Sarah McLachlan – "I Will Remember You"
