KDMEO, WE DON'T KNOW DRUGS. Judy and Linda stall for fall by watching four ridiculously popular Kdramas from 2004-2013! How is every single one of these about a poor dumdum uncovering a rich douchebag's heart of gold?

We will be hibernating for December, in hopes that we'll get some dramas worth checking out in 2022. Happy holidays and happy New Year!

Digressions:

1:51 - New Patreon donor and Listener E-mails!

14:14 - On a whim, Judy tried out "Inspector Koo" (구경이), starring Lee YoungAe. It's pretty watchable and has a great supporting cast.

16:51 - "The Handmaiden" (아가씨) is a hauntingly memorable film. It was directed by Park ChanWook, who also directed the Vengeance series of films.

18:27 - A notorious dictator is dead! Judy celebrated by watching "A Taxi Driver" (택시운전사), a 2017 film about the 1980 Gwangju Uprising.

21:03 - "Arcane" is a Netflix animated series based in the "League of Legends" universe and is an amazing show, even if you have never played the video game.

22:36 - Judy has been walking down the anime nostalgia lane with the 2019 series, "Fruits Basket" (フルーツバスケット). Ignore the stereotypical shoujo fantasy premise and focus on the message about friends, family and helping each other heal from trauma.

25:21 - "The Heirs" (왕관을 쓰려는 자, 그 무게를 견뎌라 – 상속자들) is an SBS drama from 2013, starring Lee MinHo, Park ShinHye, Kim JiWon and Kim WooBin. Ah yes, rich people problems and English-speaking "actors", Judy's favourite things in a drama.

35:50 - "Princess Hours" (궁) is a 2006 MBC drama set in an alternate universe in which Korea has a constitutional monarchy. It stars Yoon EunHye, Ju JiHoon and Song JiHyo. Yoon EunHye is playing pretty much the same character as in "Coffee Prince", a spunky girl who has to save her family from poverty.

43:17 - "Master's Sun" (주군의 태양) is a 2013 SBS drama, starring So JiSub and Gong HyoJin. Linda didn't manage to finish the episode, so Judy struggles to recap the latter half, which is absolutely bonkers.

54:30 - "Full House" (풀하우스) is a 2004 KBS drama, starring Rain and Song HyeKyo. Words cannot adequately express just how awful this drama was. How was this so popular?

Some Korean terms:

흙수저: [heuk-soo-jeo] literally "dirt spoon" as compared to "silver spoon"; from an impoverished background.

알바: short for 아르바이트 [ah-reu-bah-ee-teu]; taken from German word, "arbeit", meaning "work"; minimum wage job.

미숫가루: [mi-soot-ga-roo] mixed grain powder that is usually blended with water, ice and sugar to make a summer drink.

범생: [beom-seng] short for "모범생" [mo-beom-seng], meaning "model student".

가채: [ga-che] intricate traditional wig worn by women.

한복: [han-bok] traditional Korean clothing.

사극: [sa-geuk] historical drama.

눈치: [noon-chi] a combination of "tact" and "situational awareness"; to be lacking in "눈치" is an insult.

모자라다: [mo-ja-ra-da] "to be not enough"; "to be slow" if used to describe a person.

제수씨: [jeh-soo-ssi] respectful way of addressing the significant other of a younger brother/friend.

Audio credits:

TRPP - "Inspector Koo" (구경이) OST - "Yeah (Round and Round)"

Jo YeongWook - "The Handmaiden" (아가씨) OST - "The Tree from Mount Fuji"

Cho HyeWon - "A Taxi Driver" (택시운전사) OST - "The Customer I Left Behind" (두고 온 손님)

Imagine Dragons - "Arcane" - "Enemy"

Beverly - "Fruits Basket" (フルーツバスケット) - "Again"

WARNING - THE LAST 15 MINUTES IS BASICALLY RIFFING. Judy and Linda stall for fall by watching four classic Kdramas from 2000-2010!

Next week, we continue to stall for fall by trying out "Full House" (풀하우스), "Princess Hours" (궁), "Master's Sun" (주군의 태양) and "The Heirs" (왕관을 쓰려는 자, 그 무게를 견뎌라 – 상속자들).

Digressions:

1:22 - New Patreon donor!

1:40 - Judy, like a fool, thought that she could just enjoy the candy-coloured Pixar movie, "Luca" without crying. Check it out!

6:01 - "Autumn in My Heart" (가을동화) is a ridiculously popular KBS melodrama from 2000, starring Song SeungHun, Song HyeKyo and Won Bin. Who knew we would scream so much while watching it?

17:53 - "Winter Sonata" (겨울연가) is the next offering from the creators of "Autumn in My Heart". Bae YongJun and Choi JiWoo are decidedly not young enough to play teenagers, but here we are. If you want to visit Nami island, the tourist attraction that Linda talks about, it's only about 50km away from Seoul!

28:02 - "Coffee Prince" (커피프린스 1호점) is a MBC reverse harem drama, starring Gong Yoo, Yoon EunHye and Lee SunKyun. Gong Yoo's character is your typical rich pretty boy who mooches off his family, while Yoon EunHye's character is more spunky and fun!

35:07 - "My Girlfriend is a Gumiho" (내 여자친구는 구미호) is a 2010 SBS fantasy drama. Lee SeungGi's character is a poor imitation of Gong Yoo's character from "Coffee Prince". Shin MinAh proves that she has always been frigging gorgeous.

Some Korean terms:

시장: [shi-jang] marketplace.

국밥: [guk-bap] meat and vegetable stew with rice.

과학고: [gwa-hak-go] science high school.

Audio credits:

Dan Romer - "Luca" - "Meet Luca"

Digressions:

3:09 - Listener E-mails!

24:10 - Judy was a guest on a recent episode of "The InfatuAsian Podcast", hosted by Curtis, our West Coast Correspondent! Click here to check out the episode.

26:43 - Linda finished season 2 of "The Baby-Sitters Club".

27:05 - "Free Guy" was a standard fluffy light Ryan Reynolds movie.

Some Korean terms:

고로케: [go-ro-ke] taken from the Japanese (コロッケ) version of croquette.

층계: [cheung-gye] older term for stairs; not actually from Japanese, as Linda thought.

간지: [gan-ji] slang based on Japanese (感じ) word for "feel"; "cool".

HE'S A HACKER, QUESTION MARK?! Judy and Linda try out newer dramas for Fall 2021.

We decided to give "D.P." (Deserter Pursuit), starring Jung HaeIn, Koo KyoHwan and Kim SungKyun, its own KDMEO episode. Coming soon!

Digressions:

0:47 - New Patreon donors and Listener E-mails!

11:39 - Judy insists that you watch "Seinfeld", now on Netflix, but only from season 2 onwards.

14:29 - Let season 2 of "The Baby-Sitters Club" give you a warm, comforting hug.

15:49 - "Far Cry 6" is out! Judy is new to the franchise and is eager to acquire the so-called Battle Chicken, but will it be enough to stave off the post-Mass Effect depression?

19:04 - Linda really enjoyed "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings", reminiscent of beautiful martial arts movies of old.

23:37 - "Yumi's Cells" (유미의 세포들) is a TVN drama, starring Kim GoEun and An BoHyun. It's based on a 2015 webtoon, which may have been amusing, but the animated bits slow down the pace way too much. Kim GoEun's bangs and An BoHyun's chin scruff are distractingly awful.

30:29 - "Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha" (갯마을 차차차) is a TVN romantic comedy, starring Shin MinA and Kim SeonHo. Judy remembers the 2004 movie with much fondness. This is an easy watch with two adorable lead actors, so try it out!

39:24 - "Police University" (경찰수업) is an eyeroll-inducing piece from KBS. It stars JinYoung (B1A4), Krystal (f(x)) and Cha TaeHyun, and they can't do anything to help the godawful material.

Some Korean terms:

답답하다 [dap-dap-ha-da] to be frustrated.

뽑기 [ppop-gi] candy made with sugar and baking soda; currently super popular due to "Squid Game".

Audio credits:

Jonathan Wolff - "Seinfeld Theme"

Potty Mouth - "I Wanna"

DJ Shadow - "Nobody Speak"

Joel P West - "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" - "Xu Shang-Chi"

"Jurassic Park" - "It's a UNIX system! I know this..."

ARE WE ANTI-ROMANCE? Judy and Linda are grateful for episodes 1-2 of “Hospital Playlist” (슬기로운 의사생활), a TVN medical ensemble drama starring Jeon MiDo, Jo JungSuk, Yoo YeonSeok, Jung KyungHo and Kim DaeMyung.

Some of the nicknames we used for characters in season 1:

Ice Man - Kim JoonWan, cardiothoracic surgeon played by Jung KyungHo

Long Winter - Jang GyeoWool, General Surgery resident played by Shin HyunBin

26:39 - Linda rewatched all of "Downton Abbey" and found it wanting as the seasons went on.

29:00 - Judy binge watched "Fleabag", starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge. It's a black comedy about broken people and you can't look away.

Some Korean terms:

DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO BUILD A SNOWMAN AFTER A MURDER? Judy and Linda try out newer dramas for Spring 2021.

We're taking a short break! Think of us in cocoons dreaming of the second season of "Hospital Playlist" (슬기로운 의사생활). We'll be back here and there, if there's anything fun that comes out.

Digressions:

0:47 - Listener E-mails!

11:13 - Judy offers up a correction for episode 169: "As quickly as a lie"

12:54 - Vox has great informative videos on Youtube, but their Coronavirus playlist is particularly important. Please check it out for reliable information from experts.

14:36 - Linda is hooked on Wendy's (Red Velvet) first mini-album, but especially the song, "When This Rain Stops"

16:34 - Judy is fascinated with the documentary series about a single mom in Korea on SayuriTV

20:33 - Linda watched the second season of "Stranger" and was okay with it.

22:18 - Judy loves "Battlestar Galactica" (2004) so much. Even though it's sci fi, it's grounded in real human concerns and asks what it means to be human and whether we are worth redeeming.

25:33 - We had a watch party with our Patreon donors for the first episode of "Sisyphus" (시지프스) and it was only bearable because of the snarky company.

32:46 - "Mouse" (마우스) is a thriller from TVN, starring Lee SeungGi and Ahn JaeWook. The crimes were graphic and difficult to watch, but we also couln't take the drama seriously because of some pointedly stupid choices.

48:23 - "Vincenzo" (빈센조) is a TVN action comedy thriller (?) that is tonally all over the place. Song JoongKi plays a Korean-Italian mafia consigliere. We were hoping for a straight up revenge story, but there's some corporate shenanigans mixed with "Kung Fu Hustle"-esque cast of kooky characters. Linda's going to watch more of it though!

54:19 - "Navillera" (나빌레라) is yet another TVN slice of life drama. It stars Park InHwan as the most adorable elderly man who longs to learn ballet dancing, and Song Kang as an aspiring ballerino who's going to teach him. It's so predictable, but in a good, heartwarming way.

Some Korean terms:

거짓말처럼:[geo-jit-mal-cheo-reom] literally "like a lie"; unbelievably.

어처구니없어: [eo-cheo-goo-ni-up-suh] absurd.

Audio credits:

Wendy (Red Velvet) - "When This Rain Stops"

Bear McCreary - "Battlestar Galactica" - "Season 1 Title Intro"

T. Rex - "I Love to Boogie"

BEHOLD LINDA'S FURY. Judy and Linda try out older dramas suggested by our Patreon donors. Thank you for prompting us to try out shows that were on the back burner.

Our Spring First Impressions episode will feature "Sisyphus: The Myth" (시지프스), "Vincenzo" (빈센조), "Mouse" (마우스), "Navillera" (나빌레라) and "River Where the Moon Rises" (달이 뜨는 강).

Digressions:

2:43 - New Patreon donors and Listener E-mails!

6:39 - STOP AAPI HATE.

16:21 - Judy is uplifted by the "Feel the Rhythm of Korea" videos from Korea Tourism Organization. Check them out here!

20:46 - *NO spoilers* We're having fun watching "Falcon and the Winter Soldier"!

22:41 - Judy enjoyed the female friendships in "Hustlers". Jennifer Lopez, WOWZA.

24:46 - Linda rewatched "Little Women" and liked it better than the first time.

26:15 - Judy likes Andy Samberg and she likes "Palm Springs"

28:51 - Linda is loving the lightness of "The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers" series on Disney+

31:57 - "My Mister" (나의 아저씨) is a depressingly realistic drama from TVN (2018), starring IU and Lee SunKyun. There's excellent acting all round and Lee SunKyun's voice is delectable, but we were so crushed by the experience that we don't know if we can continue.

41:44 - "Stranger" (비밀의 숲) is a 2017 TVN drama about - surprise, surprise - corruption in the justice system. It stars Cho SeungWoo as a partially lobotomized (?!) prosecutor and Bae DooNa as a kickass detective!

47:59 - We were both surprised by how much we liked "Melo is My Nature" (멜로가 체질), a 2019 JTBC slice of life drama about a group of friends in their 30s. If you haven't seen it yet, you should check it out for the witty banter and touching moments.

56:39 - "You're Beautiful" (미남이시네요) is a 2009 SBS drama from Park ShinHye, Jang GeunSuk and Lee HongKi. It's part of the terrible trend in the 2000s where every romantic comedy tried to be "Boys Over Flowers".

Some Korean terms:

거짓말처럼 빠르게: [geo-jit-mal-cheo-reom-ppa-reu-geh] as quickly as a lie; expression used for something that's fast.

끔찍해:  [ggeum-jjik-heh] horrible.

판소리: [pan-so-ri] traditional Korean singing.

해녀: [heh-nyeo] traditional Korean women divers.

Audio credits:

LEENALCHI (이날치) - Tiger is Coming (범 내려온다)

Henry Jackman - "Falcon and the Winter Soldier" - "Louisiana Hero"

Cardi B - "Money"

Alexandre Desplat - "Little Women" Soundtrack - "Little Women"

Patrick Cowley - "Megatron Man"

Philip Glass - "Koyaanisqatsi"

JUST LIGHTLY TOSS THE KID ASIDE, FFS!!! Judy and Linda do their utmost to put off talking about episodes 13-16 of "The Uncanny Counter" (경이로운 소문), a supernatural action comedy from OCN, starring Jo ByungGyu, Kim SeJeong, Yoon JoonSang and Yeom HyeRan.

I'm not even going to bother writing a blurb about the finale episodes here. Instead, I'll tell you about our special episode, for which our Patreon donors suggested older dramas for us to talk about! In episode 169, we'll be talking about "My Mister" (나의 아저씨), "Melo is My Nature" (멜로가 체질), "Stranger" (비밀의 숲) and "You're Beautiful" (미남이시네요).

Digressions:

3:25 - ***SPOILER ALERT**** Judy and Linda watched "Minari", starring Steven Yeun, Han YeRi and Yoon YuhJung

17:07 - ***SPOILER ALERT*** Judy and Linda loved "WandaVision". Talk about a clever series that actually plans out things ahead of time!

23:44 - Judy finally caved and watched "Little Women" (2019) starring Saoirse Ronan. She liked it, almost as much as the 1994 version!

26:58 - Linda watched "Soul" and was emotionally destroyed

29:28 - Judy found "Mary, Queen of Scots" very pretty to look at. Mary, Queen of Scots is still unlikable as ever, though.

34:09 - Linda started watching "Hello, My Twenties" (청춘시대)

Korean terms:

미나리: [mi-na-ri] water dropwort; frequently eaten in Korean stews.

HOW ARE THE DEMONS THE SMARTEST PEOPLE IN THIS? Judy and Linda need help understanding episodes 9-12 of "The Uncanny Counter" (경이로운 소문), a supernatural action comedy from OCN, starring Jo ByungGyu, Kim SeJeong, Yoon JoonSang and Yeom HyeRan.

You can really see the writer making things up on the fly in these episodes. If you already hit all these plot points, what can you possibly have left in the final four? Linda gives some ominous hints about what's coming in the finale.

Digressions:

0:56 - Listener E-mails!

3:32 - We really want to watch "Minari" starring Steven Yeun, Han YeRi and Yoon YuhJung

18:16 - Judy was very much intrigued by "I, Tonya" starring Margot Robbie

20:59 - Linda found "The Queen's Gambit" surprisingly easy to watch, even with all the chess.

23:59 - Judy is obsessed with Sunmi's latest song "Tail" (꼬리). Original music video is great, but also make sure to check out the performance video!

29:13 - Korean naming tradition

1:11:58 - Our Patreon donors get to suggest what we cover in our upcoming "Choose what we watch!" episode. Join us on Patreon to participate!

Korean terms:

스킨십: [seu-kin-ship] physical touch.

완전체: [wan-jeon-che] completeness

HIT THE LADY DEMON, SOMUN! Judy and Linda are impatient with episodes 5-8 of "The Uncanny Counter" (경이로운 소문), a supernatural action comedy from OCN, starring Jo ByungGyu, Kim SeJeong, Yoon JoonSang and Yeom HyeRan.

Our next Watch Party for "Space Sweepers" (Song JoongKi and Kim TaeRi) is Feb 20, 5pm EDT! Become a Patreon donor to join the fun!

Judy and Linda spend an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out the demon levelling system and other Counter/Guardian logistics. Why does a contract killer/level 3 demon get a more emotional backstory than Hana (Kim SeJeong)?

Digressions:

1:01 - New Patreon donor and Listener E-mails!

12:44 - Please check out the charming cooking content from Sohla El-Waylly on the Babish Culinary Universe and Food52

14:27 - Linda finished watching the first season of "Bridgerton" on Netflix!

16:37 - You know Judy loves "Scrubs". Check out the podcast, "Fake Doctors, Real Friends" hosted by Zach Braff and Donald Faison! "Scrubs" is also coming to Disney+ on February 23!

18:43 - Judy is enjoying "PushingUpRoses", a Youtube channel covering random episodes of classic TV and old-school video games!

20:27 - "OutsideXbox" is Judy's favourite Youtube channel about video games. It's run by snarky former video games journalists and if you like our particular sense of humour, you'll enjoy their content.

HOW IS THIS JUSTICE? Judy and Linda demand justice from episodes 2-4 of "The Uncanny Counter" (경이로운 소문), a supernatural action comedy from OCN, starring Jo ByungGyu, Kim SeJeong, Yoon JoonSang and Yeom HyeRan.

All the rules pertaining to the Counters and their work are annoyingly loosey goosey, so it's difficult to get invested when anyone breaks or adheres to them. Linda posits that there are not enough Counters to cover all of South Korea and wonders how they would cover larger countries, like Canada. Judy wonders why there aren't many K-dramas that cast cops in a positive light, compared to American shows.

Digressions:

1:08 – New Patreon donor and Listener E-mails!

5:29 - Linda finished "Start-Up" (스타트업) and appreciated that the ending didn't crash and burn

10:46 - Judy smoothly segues into Epik High's new album, "Epik High Is Here"

19:58 - Judy finally watched "The Dressmaker", starring Kate Winslet and loved its quirkiness

23:42 - Judy also binged all of "The Bonfire of Destiny" (Le Bazar de la Charite), a French period mini-series set in 1897. Watch with subtitles, not dubs!

1:17:00 - It all starts to fall apart. Drink responsibly.

Some Korean terms:

소문: [so-moon] rumour.

OOF. Judy and Linda were pretty disappointed by the scant selection of K-dramas this winter. We did find an unexpected gem, though!

Digressions:

1:08 – Listener E-mails! We get listener feedback on “Bridgerton”, and the terrible dramas we watched for Episode 163!

18:46 – Linda started watching "Youn's Stay" (윤스테이), a spin-off of the variety show, “Youn’s Kitchen” (윤식당) . We hope it becomes accessible to non-Korean speaking viewers soon!

25:21 – Judy scratched her H.P. Lovecraft itch by watching "Color Out of Space" (2019) starring Nicolas Cage.

27:30 – Judy continues her Nicolas Cage run with the Netflix series, "History of Swear Words"!

29:16 - "Run On" (런온) is a JTBC romantic comedy (???), starring Im SiWan, Shin SeKyung and SooYoung (Girl's Generation). As predicted, SooYoung is the best part about this drama, but we're not about to watch hours of something just for 5 minutes of catty fun.

39:43 - "True Beauty" (여신강림) is a godawful TVN drama based on a webtoon (sigh). It stars Moon GaYoung and Cha EunWoo. It's basically "My ID is Gangnam Beauty" all over again, but makeup instead of plastic surgery! We HATED all the characters in this.

48:05 - "The Penthouse" (펜트하우스) is an absolutely bonkers drama from SBS, starring Eugene (S.E.S) and Kim SoYeon. Can you believe this was our second choice?

1:04:39 - "Lovestruck in the City" (도시남녀의 사랑법) is a uniquely crafted drama from KakaoTV, and stars Ji ChangWook and Kim JiWon. Judy liked the natural acting in the slice-of-life flashbacks of the characters, while Linda was annoyed by the forced premise and lack of plot.

1:15:03 - "The Uncanny Counter" (경이로운 소문) was a last minute addition to this episode. It's an OCN supernatural comedy, starring Jo ByungGyu, Kim SeJeong, Yoon JoonSang and Yeom HyeRan. The news that the writer dropped out in episode 13 is very concerning to us, but so far we are enjoying the chemistry between the characters!

Some Korean terms:

한옥: [han-ok] traditional Korean house.

구미호: [goo-mi-ho] nine-tailed fox.

발연기: [bal-yeon-gi] bad acting; literally "foot acting".

MY GOD, MY GOD WHAT HAVE WE DONE? Well, we finally did it, folks. We watched the three dramas we swore we would never watch, and we did it for you! [through gritted teeth] HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Digressions:

5:29 - New Patreon donors and Listener E-mails! Our listener, Liz, sent us a link to the Youtube video of the K-Pop Festival. Check it out!

10:08 - Judy snobbily watched the first season of "Bridgerton", the hot new Shondaland drama

16:12 - Linda is watching "Start-Up" (스타트-업)!

18:13 - "How Are You Bread" (하와유브레드) is a 2020 web drama starring Suho (EXO) and Lee SeYoung. It's so utterly cookie-cutter (see what I did there?) and bad, but we finally know how they chose the baffling title!

35:57 - "My ID is Gangnam Beauty" (내 아이디는 강남미인) is a 2018 JTBC drama starring Im SooHyang and Cha EunWoo (ASTRO). Judy is mad at literally everything in this drama, but Linda suggests that that might be the actual intention of this awful drama.l

47:33 - "Cool Guys, Hot Ramen" (꽃미남 라면가게) is a 2011 TVN drama starring Jung IlWoo and Lee ChungAh based on a web novel. It's so patently trying to be "Boys Over Flowers", but it's even more boring and problematic. The goofy title sadly does not pay off.

For our Winter 2021 First Impressions, we'll be watching "Run On" (런온), "Lovestruck in the City" (도시남녀의 사랑법), "The Penthouse" (펜트하우스) and "True Beauty" (여신강림). Should be...interesting?

Some Korean terms:

떡 장인: [ddeok-jang-in] rice cake artisan.

조선: [jo-seon] Korean dynasty from 1392 to 1897

도련님: [do-ryeon-nim] old Korean address for "young master".

한옥: [han-ok] traditional Korean house.

머슴: [meo-seum] male servant in olden times.

안부: [an-boo] greeting.

슈퍼마켓: [shu-peo-ma-ket] Koreanization of "supermarket"; closer to a corner store than a big grocery store"

어학연수: [eo-hak-yeon-soo] language training.

얼굴천재: [eol-gool-cheon-jeh] literally "face genius"; a good-looking person.
